[Termes IGN] teneur totale en électronsRésumé : (Auteur) Most of the space-geodetic observation techniques can be used for modeling the distribution of free electrons in the Earth’s ionosphere. By combining different techniques one can take advantage of their different spatial and temporal distributions as well as their different observation characteristics and sensitivities concerning ionospheric parameter estimation. The present publication introduces a procedure for multi-dimensional ionospheric modeling. The model consists of a given reference part and an unknown correction part expanded in terms of B-spline functions. This approach is used to compute regional models of Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) based on the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI 2007) and GPS observations from terrestrial Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reference stations, radio occultation data from Low Earth Orbiters (LEOs), dual-frequency radar altimetry measurements, and data obtained by Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). The approach overcomes deficiencies in the climatological IRI model and reaches the same level of accuracy than GNSS-based VTEC maps from IGS. In areas without GNSS observations (e.g., over the oceans) radio occultations and altimetry provide valuable measurements and further improve the VTEC maps. Moreover, the approach supplies information on the offsets between different observation techniques as well as on their different sensitivity for ionosphere modeling. Altogether, the present procedure helps to derive improved ionospheric corrections (e.g., for one-frequency radar altimeters) and at the same time it improves our knowledge on the Earth’s ionosphere. [Termes IGN] interféromètrie par radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In recent years, significant progress has been made in developing theory and methods for modeling, detecting, and correcting ionospheric effects in low-frequency synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. While a large number of correction methods have been developed that differ in sensitivity, data needs, and spatiotemporal accuracy, a lack of performance requirements for ionospheric correction has prevented an evaluation of their suitability for operational implementation. Hence, this paper focuses on the development of performance requirements for the correction of ionospheric effects in low-frequency SAR data. The requirements are derived considering the data quality needs of a set of SAR applications and will ensure the SAR data after ionospheric correction to meet calibration specifications and maintain full performance during all ionospheric conditions. The proposed requirements can serve as a benchmark for a performance assessment of ionospheric correction methods and will help define their suitability for operational implementation. Requirements are determined for SAR polarimetry, SAR imaging, SAR interferometry, and ionospheric research. [Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) The first-order ionospheric error is reduced in the dual-frequency Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). In this paper, the possibility of eliminating ionospheric higher-order errors in the multifrequency GNSS is explored. Since the second-order error associated with the geomagnetic field effect on the refractive index can be eliminated in dual-frequency measurements, we explore the possibility of eliminating third-order errors in triple-frequency GNSS in view of phase scintillations. A connection between the possibility of improving the multifrequency GNSS accuracy and diffraction effects in radio signal propagation through the randomly inhomogeneous ionosphere is shown. The numerical simulation has revealed that the systematic, residual ionospheric error is considerably reduced when we pass on from dual-frequency to triple-frequency measurements. The change in the residual error variance during such a transition depends however on the relationship between the inner scale of the turbulent spectrum of ionospheric irregularities and the Fresnel radius. Given the inner scale larger than the Fresnel radius, not only the systematic error, but also the standard deviation reduces when we pass on from dual-frequency to triple-frequency measurements. Otherwise, when the Fresnel radius exceeds the inner scale, the variance increases with increasing number of frequencies in use.
