[Termes IGN] thermographie aérienneRésumé : (Auteur) The directional surface temperatures over urban areas are measured using an airborne TIR camera equipped with wide-angle lenses. The experimental design is described and the possible sources of errors related to the instruments and the atmosphere are analysed and corrections proposed. The data acquisition protocol is adapted to provide directional TIR measurements in a - 60° to + 60° range for zenith and 0 to 360° for azimuth view angles. Two parts of the city of Marseille, the densely built old city centre and a built/vegetated mixture of individual houses and gardens in a suburb, have been studied during summer 2001 in the framework of the UBL-ESCOMPTE project. The results obtained reveal important hot spot effects and differences of surface brightness temperatures varying between - 5 and 7 K between nadir and off-nadir measurements, according to azimuth view angles. Acquisitions performed over the two areas also illustrate the impact of the surface structure and presence of vegetation on the hot spot. An example application for the correction of two temporal series of NOAA 14 and NOAA 16 data is given. [Termes IGN] théodoliteRésumé : (Auteur) Calibration is a set of operations that establish, under specified conditions, the relationship between values of quantities indicated by measuring instrument or system, and the corresponding values realized by standards. Calibration is achieved by means of direct comparison against measurement standards certified reference materials. In geodetic works, there is always the need to ensure the quality of the carried out measurements, in agreement with the proper per project accuracy specifications. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the measuring accuracy of the instruments weakens during use. In order to achieve the accuracy of the measurements to comply with the specifications or standards, the calibration of the instruments used (from optical theodolites and levels to EDM instruments, Total Stations and GPS systems) is of paramount importance. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne laser altimetry has the potential to make frequent detailed observations that are important for many aspects of studying land surface processes. However, the uncertainties inherent in airborne laser altimetry data have rarely been well measured. Uncertainty is often specified as generally as 20 cm in elevation and 40 cm planimetric. To better constrain these uncertainties, we present an analysis of several datasets acquired specifically to study the temporal consistency of laser altimetry data and, thus, assess its operational value. The error budget has three main components, each with a time regime. For measurements acquired less than 50 ms apart, elevations have a local standard deviation in height of 3.5 cm, enabling the local measurement of surface roughness of the order of 5 cm. Points acquired seconds apart acquire an additional random error due to differential geographic positioning system fluctuation. Measurements made up to an hour apart show an elevation drift of 7 cm over a half hour. Over months, this drift gives rise to a random elevation offset between swathes, with an average of 6.4 cm. The root mean square planimetric error in point location was derived as 37.4 cm. We conclude by considering the consequences of these uncertainties on the principle application of laser altimetry in the U.K. intertidal zone monitoring. [Termes IGN] topographie localeRésumé : (Auteur) Quantitative surface analysis through quadratic modelling of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) is a promising tool for automatically describing the physical environment in ecological studies of terrestrial landscapes. Fundamental topographic variables such as slope, aspect, plan and profile curvature can be simply calculated from the parameters of a conic equation fitted to a DEM window through the least-squares method. The scale of the analysis, defined by the size of the DEM window used to fit the conic equation, affects both the estimated value of the topographic variables and the propagation of elevation errors to derived topographic variables. The least-squares method is amenable to the analytical treatment of the propagation of elevation errors to the derived topographical variables. A general analytical model of error propagation is presented that accounts for the effects of window size and of spatial autocorrelation in elevation errors. The method is based on the Taylor approximation of the least-square fitting equation and allows for the presence of stationary autocorrelation in the elevation errors. In numerical simulations with DEMs from British Columbia, Canada, it is shown that increasing the size of evaluation windows effectively reduces the propagation of elevation errors to the derived topographic variables. However, this was obtained at the expense of topographic detail. A methodology is proposed to evaluate quantitatively the loss of topographic detail through a X2-test of the corrected residuals in the immediate neighbourhood of the evaluation point. This methodology, in combination with the analytical model of error propagation, can be used to select the scale or range of scales at which to calculate topographic variables from a DEM.
