[Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (auteur) LiDAR full-waveform (LFW) pulse density is not homogeneous along study areas due to overlap between contiguous flight stripes and, to a lesser extent, variations in height, velocity and altitude of the platform. As a result, LFW-derived metrics extracted at the same spot but at different pulse densities differ, which is called “side-lap effect”. Moreover, this effect is reflected in forest stand estimates, since they are predicted from LFW-derived metrics. This study was undertaken to analyze LFW-derived metric variations according to pulse density, voxel size and value assignation method in order to reduce the side-lap effect. Thirty LiDAR samples with a minimum density of 16 pulses.m−2 were selected from the testing area and randomly reduced to 2 pulses.m−2 with an interval of 1 pulse.m−2, then metrics were extracted and compared for each sample and pulse density at different voxel sizes and assignation values. Results show that LFW-derived metric variations as a function of pulse density follow a negative exponential model similar to the exponential semivariogram curve, increasing sharply until they reach a certain pulse density, where they become stable. This value represents the minimum pulse density (MPD) in the study area to optimally minimize the side-lap effect. This effect can also be reduced with pulse densities lower than the MPD modifying LFW parameters (i.e. voxel size and assignation value). Results show that LFW-derived metrics are not equally influenced by pulse density, such as number of peaks (NP) and ROUGHness of the outermost canopy (ROUGH) that may be discarded for further analyses at large voxel sizes, given that they are highly influenced by pulse density. In addition, side-lap effect can be reduced by either increasing pulse density or voxel size, or modifying the assignation value. In practice, this leads to a proper estimate of forest stand variables using LFW data. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) The accuracy of georeferenced TLS point clouds is directly influenced by site-dependent GNSS effects, deteriorating the accuracy of the ground control point coordinate estimation. Especially under challenging GNSS conditions, this is a crucial problem. One common approach is to minimize these effects by longer observation durations, which in turn increases the effort in time and cost. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed that provides accurate georeferencing results, even under challenging measurement conditions and short observation durations. It iteratively improves the georeferencing accuracy by determining and applying obstruction adaptive elevation masks to the GNSS observations. The algorithm is tested and assessed using the data of a field test. It is demonstrated that after only 5 minutes observation duration, the ground control point coordinates can be estimated with an accuracy of 1 to 2 cm, independent from the GNSS measurement conditions. Initial states of the elevation masks are determined from a point cloud that is georeferenced using coordinates from a single point positioning solution, enhanced by a RAIM-FDE approach. Afterwards, the coordinates are estimated in a weighted least-squares baseline solution and both, the elevation masks and the coordinate estimation, are iteratively improved. Besides the significant reduction of measurement time, the proposed algorithm allows for increasing the amount of ground control points and can be applied to other direct or indirect GNSS-based georeferencing approaches. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Mobile Mapping is the technique of acquiring accurate geospatial information of a scene using multiple sensors mounted on a moving platform. At the core of these systems is the direct georeferencing techniques that tie together multi-sensor data on-board. An important aspect of direct georeferencing is to apply accurate boresight calibration of individual sensors with respect to the platform body frame. Conventional techniques use Ground Control Points (GCP) for this calibration. Considering the challenges in identifying GCPs from low density lidar point cloud, this research presents a feature-based registration method that uses control planes. The presented method is performed in a lab-facility utilizing static data to determine the alignment between platform body frame and lidar frame by minimizing the volume formed between low point density lidar and control planes. The paper discusses the mathematical models and feasibility of the technique for use in mapping applications. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Photogrammetric processing is available in various software solutions and can easily deliver 3D pointclouds as accurate as 1 pixel. Certain applications, e.g., very accurate shape reconstruction in industrial metrology or change detection for deformation studies in geosciences, require results of enhanced accuracy. The tie-point extraction step is the opening in the photogrammetric processing chain and therefore plays a key role in the quality of the subsequent image orientation, camera calibration and 3D reconstruction. Improving its precision will have an impact on the obtained 3D. In this research work we describe a method which aims at enhancing the accuracy of image orientation by adding a second iteration photogrammetric processing. The result from the classical processing is used as a priori information to guide the extraction of refined tie-points of better photogrammetric quality. Evaluated on indoor and UAV acquisitions, the proposed methodology shows a significant improvement on the obtained 3D point accuracy.
