[Termes IGN] points homologuesRésumé : (Auteur) Direct measurement of exterior orientation parameters has been a challenge in photogrammetry for many years. Direct sensor orientation using a calibrated GPS/INS system can potentially eliminate the need for ground control points and aerial triangulation, and consequently, result in a great reduction in the cost and time of aerial photogrammetry. Previous studies have shown that, compared to conventional aerial triangulation, direct sensor orientation yields larger errors in the image and object space. It has also been shown that including a number of tie points within an integrated orientation approach can result in a reduction of errors in the image space. In this paper, the influence of the number and distribution of tie points on integrated orientation is investigated. Experiments with various numbers of tie points regularly as well as randomly distributed are presented. Results indicate that an increase in the number of tie points up to one point per model results in a considerable reduction of the errors in the image space. [Termes IGN] uniformisation d'histogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Atmospheric haze variations, temporal differences, atmosphere’s or ground surfaces’ and Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF), are well-known sources of radiometric heterogeneities in aerial images. It is necessary to correct them for many applications, such as the generation of large seamless mosaics of orthoimages, or land-cover classifications. This contribution describes a method for equalizing digital aerial images based on a parametric, semi-empirical radiometric model. The model’s parameters are computed through a global least-squares minimization process, using radiometric tie-points in overlapping areas between images. The method may be called a “radiometric aerial triangulation” since its principle is quite similar to a standard aerial triangulation. It leads to a relative equalization between images, keeping their original contrast and color information. The method has been successfully applied operationally to more than forty projects comprising three to four thousands digital images each, for the creation of orthoimages over France. The results are good as long as atmospheric conditions are favorable and stable. [Termes IGN] valeur aberranteRésumé : (Auteur) Since the launch of Ikonos by Space Imaging, LLC on 24 September 1999, the very high resolution (VHR) satellite imagery has been applied to diverse fields. Every application needs a certain geometric accuracy in the corrected image; therefore, the planimetric accuracy control of VHR satellite imagery proves to be fundamental. As a rule of thumb, the Root Mean Square error (RMS) computed at independent check points (ICPs) is the global measure most widely used for accuracy assessment in VHR imagery. This paper presents an assessment, focused on two QuickBird and Ikonos panchromatic single images, of the number of ICPs required to obtain an estimation of one-dimensional accuracy (RMS1d) with a certain confidence level or reliability. Thus, two theoretical approaches have been tested to estimate reliability depending on the number of ICPs, and they have been experimentally validated using the Monte Carlo simulation method. The residual’s samples were generated for both satellite images in the best possible operational conditions: (a) using optimal sensor models, (b) with high accuracy ground points measured by Differential Global Positioning System, (c) with an adequate number of well distributed ground control points (GCPs), and (d) using GCPs and ICPs well-defined on the raw images, i.e., with a reasonably low pointing error. Under these conditions, the two theoretical models tested provided a good fit (r2 >97 percent) for the simulated data offered by Monte Carlo when outliers were withdrawn. There were no notable differences between the results obtained from the Ikonos and QuickBird scenes. The proposed method in this paper is different from the traditional methods, which improved the accuracy by increasing the number and/or improved the geometric distribution of ground control points. This proposed method first established a mathematical model of constraint condition on the building edges, such as perpendicularity, and then the established constraint conditions are merged into the orthorectification model. A test field located in downtown of Denver, CO, has been used to evaluate our methods. The experiments of comparing the accuracy achieved by our method and other methods are conducted. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method can improve the accuracy of 2-5 ft for those buildings of over 100 m high and even 5-7 ft for those buildings over 100 m high in the margin of imagery.
