[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Digital terrain models (DTMs) were extracted from SPOT-5 High Resolution Stereoscopic (HRS, 10m resolution) in-track stereo-images and High Resolution Geometric (HRG, 5m resolution) across-track stereo-images using a three-dimensional (3D) multisensor physical model developed at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Natural Resources Canada, and were evaluated against precise lidar data. Firstly, the stereo HRS and HRG photogrammetric bundle block adjustments using spatiotriangulation and autocalibration were set-up with 10 ground control points and errors of about half-resolution were obtained over 190 and 95 independent checkpoints (ICPs): 6.4m, 6.8m and 5.1m in X, Y and Z axes, and 2.6m, 2.2m and 2.9m in X, Y and Z axes for HRS and HRG, respectively. The internal accuracy are, however, better because these errors include the half-pixel image plotting error and the 3m cartographic error on ICPs. Only the results with HRS were achieved with autocalibration of the lens to correct for the radial distortions due to the largest number of pixels. The DTMs were then generated using an area-based multi-scale image matching method and 3D semi-automatic editing tools, and then compared to lidar data with 0.2m accuracy in elevation. An elevation error with 68% confidence level (LE68) of 5.2m and 6.5m were achieved over the full area for HRS and HRG, respectively. Since the DTM is in fact a digital surface model where the height, or a part, of different land cover classes (trees, houses) is included, the accuracy is depending on the land cover types. Using previous 3D visual classification, different classes (forests, residential areas, bare surfaces) were generated to take into account the height of the surfaces (natural and human-made) in the accuracy evaluation. LE68 values of 3.2m to 6.7m were thus obtained depending on the land cover types. On the other hand, LE68 values of 2.4m and 2.2m were obtained over bare surfaces for HRS and HRG, respectively. These last results are more representative of the real stereo SPOT-5 potential for DTM, compliant with the highest topographic standard. [Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (Auteur) High-resolution satellite images at sub-5-m footprint, such as IKONOS and SPOT5 HRG/HRS images, are becoming increasingly available to the earth observation community and their respective clients. The related cameras all use linear array CCD technology for image sensing. The processing of these kinds of images provides a challenge for algorithmic redesign and this offers the possibility of reconsidering and improving many photogrammetric processing components. This contribution presents an advanced matching approach for automatic DSM generation from high-resolution satellite images. It can provide dense, precise and reliable results. The method matches multiple (more than two) images simultaneously and it uses a coarse-to-fine hierarchical solution with an effective combination of several image matching algorithms and automatic quality control. The DSMs are generated by a combination of matching results of feature points, grid points and edges. The proposed approach has been applied to IKONOS images over a testfield in Thun, Switzerland with accurate ground control points, a 1600-m height range and variable land cover, but with sub-optimal imaging conditions (snow, long shadows). The accuracy tests are based on the comparison between the reference data from an airborne laser scanner and the automatically extracted DSMs. The RMS errors for the whole area, excluding trees and bushes, are 2-3 m, while for bare ground the accuracy is about 1 m or even better. [Termes IGN] point d'appuiRésumé : (Auteur) The adoption of rational functions as a preferred sensor orientation model for narrow field of view line scanner imagery accompanied the introduction of commercial high-resolution satellite imagery (HRSI) at the turn of the millennium. This paper reviews the developments in ground point determination from HRSI via the model of terrain independent rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs). A brief mathematical background to rational functions is first presented, along with a review of the models for generating RPCs from a rigorous sensor orientation, and for geopositioning via either forward intersection or monoplotting. The concept of RPC block adjustment with compensation for exterior orientation biases is then discussed, as is the means to enhance the original RPCs through a bias correction procedure. The potential for RPC block adjustment to yield sub-pixel geopositioning accuracy from HRSI is illustrated using results from experimental testing with two Quickbird stereo image pairs and three multi-image IKONOS blocks. Finally, error propagation issues in RPC block adjustment of HRSI are considered. [Termes IGN] point d'appuiRésumé : (Auteur) This article examines the extraction of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) from QuickBird stereo image pairs without the use of ground control points (GCPs). Due to the frequent unavailability of ground control points, a DEM generation method requiring no GCPs would be of significant interest to users of stereo data. The article also explores the refinement of extracted DEMs by applying horizontal shifts based on reference DEMs from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). [Termes IGN] satellite agileRésumé : (Auteur) Pleiades is a high-resolution optical Earth observation system developed by the French National Space Agency CNES, for civilian and militarian users. It will operate in 2008-2009 two agile satellites with very high geometric accuracy since latest budgets show that the system could reach, after in-flight commissioning, an absolute location performance better than the current Pleiades specifications set at 12m for 90% of images. Given this level of accuracy, the geometric calibration needs the use of a very high planimetric and altimetric accurate reference data which is obtained with heavy and costly means: generally, only one or two areas are equipped, and complete calibration could take several months after launch. In order to gain time, a first "coarse" calibration will be performed using ground control points and an accurate physical model of the instrument. This first step should allow the system to reach its specifications more quickly. This paper presents the global methodology planned to calibrate the geometric location model. It also highlight the need of an accurate GCP data base for this treatment and for periodic assessment of the location budget.
