[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Tropical forests are a key component of the global carbon cycle and climate change mitigation. Field- or LiDAR-based approaches enable reliable measurements of the structure and above-ground biomass (AGB) of tropical forests. Data derived from digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) on the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform offer several advantages over field- and LiDAR-based approaches in terms of scale and efficiency, and DAP has been presented as a viable and economical alternative in boreal or deciduous forests. However, detecting with DAP the ground in dense tropical forests, which is required for the estimation of canopy height, is currently considered highly challenging. To address this issue, we present a generally applicable method that is based on machine learning methods to identify the forest floor in DAP-derived point clouds of dense tropical forests. We capitalize on the DAP-derived high-resolution vertical forest structure to inform ground detection. We conducted UAV-DAP surveys combined with field inventories in the tropical forest of the Congo Basin. Using airborne LiDAR (ALS) for ground truthing, we present a canopy height model (CHM) generation workflow that constitutes the detection, classification and interpolation of ground points using a combination of local minima filters, supervised machine learning algorithms and TIN densification for classifying ground points using spectral and geometrical features from the UAV-based 3D data. We demonstrate that our DAP-based method provides estimates of tree heights that are identical to LiDAR-based approaches (conservatively estimated NSE = 0.88, RMSE = 1.6 m). An external validation shows that our method is capable of providing accurate and precise estimates of tree heights and AGB in dense tropical forests (DAP vs. field inventories of old forest: r2 = 0.913, RMSE = 31.93 Mg ha−1). Overall, this study demonstrates that the application of cheap and easily deployable UAV-DAP platforms can be deployed without expert knowledge to generate biophysical information and advance the study and monitoring of dense tropical forests. The accuracy is of utmost significance, yet the intention is also to find the best possible solutions for data acquisition in economic terms. The objective of the research was the analysis of various variants of the bundle block adjustment. The analysis concerns data which is diversified with respect to the type of shutter (rolling/global), the measurement of external orientation elements, the overlap and the number of ground control points (GCPs). [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (auteur) The paper summarizes the methodology followed, to evaluate the accuracy of different digitization methods of ecclesiastical monuments in 3D computer vision form and stresses the importance of photographic equipment calibration. In this study, a set of images were taken using the CANON EOS M5 digital camera, while the internal calibration parameters – horizontal and vertical focal length (fx, fy), principal point coordinates (x0, y0), radial distortion coefficients (K1, K2, K3), tangential distortion coefficients (P1, P2) and the affinity and the shear terms (b1, b2) were estimated. These parameters were calculated using different software applications and then analyzed. For the calibration procedure, 3D texture models were built with the Agisoft commercial software based on: (a) the aforementioned calibration parameters and (b) the self-calibration process. The overall accuracy (Root Mean Square – RMS) between these models, by comparing known geo-referenced ground-control-points (GCP) is presented through the Cloud Compare software. The results indicate that the internal calibration parameters of the digital camera used for documentation purposes are essential and should be systematically implemented for documentation purposes. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laserRésumé : (auteur) This study proposes a new geometric calibration method for satellite laser altimeters based on waveform matching to solve the problems of poor initial pointing accuracy and a lack of control data. This non-real-time method obtains ground control points without a fixed calibration field. First, a large area with stepped surfaces is chosen from the laser altimetry coverage. Then, the laser echo waveforms are simulated using digital surface model (DSM) data of the stepped features. The real echo waveform attempts to match the simulated echo waveforms through a waveform matching model using a global constraint. Next, the control points of the laser altimeter are obtained through waveform matching. Finally, a geometric calibration model for laser altimeters is proposed to compensate for laser pointing and ranging errors. Two experiments were conducted to verify the calibration method using ICESat/GLAS data and airborne large-footprint laser data. Experimental results confirm that the method is feasible and results in an improvement in the elevation accuracy for the airborne altimeter from 2 to 0.5 m. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Digital elevation model (DEM) filtering is critical in DEM production, and large-area meter-level resolution DEM is mainly generated from high-resolution satellite images. However, the current DEM filtering methods are mostly aimed at laser scanning data and tend to excessively remove ground points when processing a satellite digital surface model (DSM). To accurately filter out buildings and preserve terrain, we propose a DEM filtering algorithm using building segmentation results of orthophoto. Based on morphological filtering, our method estimates the probability of being a built-up area or mountains for DSM, and according to this probability the filtering parameters are adaptively adjusted. For robustness, our method performs the above filtering operation on DSM through a sliding-window approach, and finally the nonground points are determined by the votes of multiple filtering. Experiments against six representative data sets have shown that our method achieved superior performance than classical algorithms and commercial software.
