[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper explores the feasibility of integrating GPS and remote sensing data into a GIS database through rectification of satellite images of both urban and rural areas using uncorrected GPS coordinates. A GPS receiver was used to log the coordinates of 25 ground control points (GCPs) in a rural area and 20 GCPs in an urban area. Their coordinates were also read from topographic maps. Both sets of coordinates were used to rectify Landsat TM, and SPOT panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (XL) images. It is found that none of the GPS coordinates are able to achieve an acceptable accuracy level of integration unless some inaccurate GCPs are excluded. The percentage of useable GCPs varies from less than 50 to nearly 90, depending on the spatial resolution of the image and the ease of GCP identification. On average, the difficulty in identifying GCPs on the ground and the image degrades integration accuracy by up to one pixel. [Termes IGN] transformation linéaire directeRésumé : (Auteur) Very high resolution optical space images are coming more and more into competition to classical aerial images making them more important for mapping projects. The orientation process of the dominating CCD-line scanner images taken from space is quite different from the orientation of perspective photos. Different image products like nearly original images and images projected to a plane with constant height are available, this requires corresponding orientation solutions. All optical satellites are equipped with direct sensor orientation based on a positioning system, gyros and star sensors, so they can estimate the orientation parameters. For IKONOS, QuickBird and OrbView-3, this can be made without control points with a standard deviation of the ground coordinates in the range of 10 m and better. The orientation information is available as view direction from the scene centre or start of scene or as ephemeris and as rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs). This allows the determination of the scene orientation by geometric reconstruction or bias corrected RPCs using control points. In addition approximations like 3D-affine transformation, direct linear transformation and terrain related RPCs are in use. The accuracy of the methods is compared in relation to the number and distribution of the control points and the limitations of the approximations are investigated. The approximations of the orientations by 3D affine transformation and direct linear transformation can only handle images projected to a plane with constant height like IKONOS and QuickBird or Standard. For original images they are not leading to acceptable accuracy. In any case they require more and three-dimensional well distributed control points. [Termes IGN] radargrammétrieRésumé : (Auteur) Qualified ground control points (GCPs) are crucial in the geolocation of a remotely sensed image. If a region has no published map, the geographical coordinates of GCPs must be obtained indirectly. Although these can be re-constructed from a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image using sensor position and velocity, this conventional method does not provide accurate GCPs owing to the variable elevations of actual topography. We propose an inverse geolocation method for GCPs by SAR simulation. This improves the accuracy of extracted GCPs by accommodating topographic effects, and requires a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) and SAR with precise orbit data. The errors in the northing derive mainly from the imaging pulse time, and were improved by applying an azimuth time correction. In this study ERS SAR data with precise Delft orbit and shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM) DEM were used. Mean values for the planimetric distance error in the GCPs were 4.1 and 5.4 m with standard deviations of 10.6 and 16.9 m in northing and easting, respectively. The obtained GCPs were applied to an IRS image for geo-rectification, and the result was mean image positional errors of 3.6 and 2.7 m with standard deviations of 8.4 and 15.4 m in northing and easting, respectively. The root mean square errors are 9.0 and 15.3 m in northing and easting, respectively. [Termes IGN] qualité géométrique (image)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a geometric evaluation of the photogrammetric workflow resulting from an experimental aerial survey performed using a Leica Airborne Digital Sensor (ADS40) system. Imagery of a 13 km2 study area in the United Kingdom was captured using an ADS40. The study area was flown with the ADS40 at four different altitudes with resulting imagery at ground sampled distances of 15, 20, 25 and 30 cm. Ground points, comprising natural features distributed throughout the study area, were surveyed using GPS methods. In addition, RC30 film imagery and data from a lidar survey conducted using an Optech ALTM 2050 airborne laser scanner was also available for use in validation. The ADS40 imagery of the study area was processed using standard commercial software and a number of tests were conducted to geometrically assess the photogrammetric performance of imagery from the sensor at various stages throughout the photogrammetric workflow. Experiments examined the influence of ground control points (GCPs) in bundle block adjustment and the performance of digital elevation models (DEMs) resulting from the processing of ADS40 imagery. This independent research has permitted a series of initial conclusions to be drawn and preliminary recommendations to be made for optimum deployment of the ADS40 sensor under certain operational conditions. For example, it is shown that, despite advances made in direct positioning and orientation using integrated satellite and inertial surveying, the importing of GCPs into the block adjustment process remains a critical issue influencing the achievable accuracy during photogrammetric measurement. [Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) The Cartographic Institute of Catalonia (ICC) has acquired a DMC digital camera and has performed some first investigations regarding radiometric performance and geometric accuracy potential. In this cooperation with the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry (IGP), ETH Zurich various aspects are analysed. The investigations make use of recent test flights near Tortosa, a plane region with varying landcover. For the quantitative analysis of the DMC results, a ground control points and lidar data exist, which have been simultaneously acquired with the DMC images. The first part of the investigations focusses on geometric sensor modeling and aerial triangulation. Preliminary results of ICC have shown that when standard additional parameters, like the 12 Ebner parameters, are used in AT, significant systematic errors remain and each of the 4 subimages that form the virtual panchromatic image has a different pattern of image deformations. In these investigations, we do not perform analysis of additional parameters in order to model these deformations, as this has been done in another ICC work. The results are analysed using GCPs established in the above mentioned testfield, using two different bundle adjustment programs.. Another part of our investigations regarding AT deals with automatic point transfer using a high quality multi-image, multi-primitive matching method developed at IGP, initially for automatic DSM generation. Different aspects like number, distribution and accuracy of the tie points are analysed, as well number of rays per tie point. The second part of the paper focuses on automatic DSM generation. Although digital cameras offer characteristics, like better image quality, that could be used favourably in automated DSM generation, almost all commercial systems employ matching methods with limitations, like no support of multi-image matching. In these investigations, we briefly introduce the above mentioned IGP multi-image matching and present the matching results. Initial results with other digital cameras and images with large forward and side overlap have shown that this matching approach can produce DSMs at least as dense as those produced by airborne laser scanning and almost as accurate, preserving also very well surface discontinuities. The processing and DSM control was performed by IGP using lidar data provided by ICC, while ICC made an independent control of the aerial triangulation using the software programs at ICC.
