Note de contenu : Introduction

Therefore, we start with an axial symmetric ground state, which rotates uniformly and rigidly around its axis of symmetry. We define this ground state by solving Clairaut's equation with the spherical mass density given by a modified PREM-model, calculated from seismic observations. External forces will perturb this ground state and, therefore, result in a displacement field d which describes the perturbation. The displacement field fulfills the linearised momentum equation on the domain, which is approximately ellipsoidal. We reduce the linearised momentum equation together with its boundary condition from the ellipsoid to the mean sphere of the earth. It is solved by expansion into spherical harmonics, scanning in the radial direction and direct numerical integration in the time domain. The calculated displacement field describes both the time-dependent deformation and variation of rotation of the earth. We separate them by defining different types of rotation, either depending on the global trajectory (Tisserand System) or the local rotation (vorticity). Both types of rotation are calculated and compared for the surface of the earth as well as the whole earth. The appendices give an overview of the mathematical details and the foundations of continuum mechanics.
