[Termes IGN] MNS SRTMRésumé : (Auteur) Vegetation canopy heights derived from the SRTM 30 m grid DEM minus USGS National Elevation Data (NED) DTM were compared to three vegetation metrics derived from a medium footprint LIDAR data (LVIS) for the US Sierra Nevada forest in California. Generally the SRTM minus NED was found to underestimate the vegetation canopy height. Comparing the SRTM-NED-derived heights as a function of the canopy percentile height (shape/vertical structure) derived from LVIS, the SRTM SAR signal was found to penetrate, on average, into about 44% of the canopy and 85% after adjustment of the data. On the canopy type analysis, it was found that the SRTM phase scattering centres occurred at 60% for red fir, 53% for Sierra mixed conifer, 50% for ponderosa pine and 50% for montane hardwood-conifer. Whereas analysing the residual errors of the SRTM-NED minus the LVIS-derived canopy height as a function of LVIS canopy height and cover it was observed that the residuals generally increase with increasing canopy height and cover. Likewise, the behaviour of the RMSE as a function of canopy height and cover was observed to initially increase with canopy height and cover but saturates at 50 m canopy height and 60% canopy cover. On the other hand, the behaviour of the correlation coefficient as a function of canopy height and cover was found to be high at lower canopy height (15 m and 20% and Numéro de notice : A2009-257 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/01431160802555853 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/01431160802555853 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=29887

[Termes IGN] modèle stéréoscopiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Our objective was to assess the accuracy of the forest height and biomass estimates derived from an Ikonos stereo pair and a lidar digital terrain model (DTM). After the Ikonos scenes were registered to the DTM with submetric accuracy, tree heights were measured individually by subtracting the photogrammetric elevation of the treetop from the lidar ground-level elevation of the tree base. The low residual error (1.66 m) of the measurements confirmed the joint geometric accuracy of the combined models. Matched images of the stereo pair were then used to create a digital surface model. The latter was transformed to a canopy height model (CHM) by subtracting the lidar DTM. Plotwise height percentiles were extracted from the Ikonos-lidar CHM and used to predict the average dominant height and above-ground biomass. The coefficient of determination reached 0.91 and 0.79 for average height and biomass, respectively. In both cases, the accuracy of the Ikonos-lidar CHM predictions was slightly lower than that of the all-lidar reference CHM. Although the CHM heights did not saturate at moderate biomass levels, as do multispectral or radar images, values above 300 Mg ha-1 could not be predicted accurately by the Ikonos-lidar or by the all-lidar CHM. [Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) In most forestry remote sensing applications in steep terrain, simple photometric and empirical (PE) topographic corrections are confounded as a result of stand structure and species assemblages that vary with terrain and the anisotropic reflective properties of vegetated surfaces. To address these problems, we present MFM-TOPO as a new physically-based modelling (PBM) approach for normalising topographically induced signal variance as a function of forest stand structure and sub-pixel scale components. MFM-TOPO uses the Li-Strahler geometric optical mutual shadowing (GOMS) canopy reflectance model in Multiple Forward Mode (MFM) to account for slope and aspect influences directly. MFM-TOPO has an explicit physical-basis and uses sun-canopy-sensor (SCS) geometry that is more appropriate than strictly terrain-based corrections in forested areas since it preserves the geotropic nature of trees (vertical growth with respect to the geoid) regardless of terrain, view and illumination angles. MFM-TOPO is compared against our recently developed SCS+C correction and a comprehensive set of other existing PE and SCS methods (cosine, C correction, Minnaert, statistical-empirical, SCS, and b correction) for removing topographically induced variance and for improving SPOT image classification accuracy in a Rocky Mountain forest in Kananaskis, Alberta Canada. MFM-TOPO removed the most terrain-based variance and provided the greatest improvement in classification accuracy within a species and stand density based class structure. For example, pine class accuracy was increased by 62% over shaded slopes, and spruce class accuracy was increased by 13% over more moderate slopes. In addition to classification, MFM-TOPO is suitable for retrieving biophysical parameters in mountainous terrain. Data sets from two test sites were delivered to the twelve participants of the project. For each test site the following data were available and could be downloaded from the FGI ftp-site: aerial images, camera calibration and image orientation information, ground control point coordinates and jpg-images of point locations, laser scanner data with three different pulse densities, digital terrain model and a training data set. In this report the test sites used, data sets and the reference data are described. The tree extraction methods used by the participants and methods used in accuracy evaluation are explained in this report. The produced tree models are depicted and analysed with respect to tree location, tree height, crown base height and crown delineation accuracy. Finally, a discussion and conclusions chapter summarise the results of the project. Surprisingly, results show that the extraction method is the main factor on the achieved accuracy. When the laser point density increases from two points to eight points per m2, the improvement in crown base height and crown delineation accuracy is marginal but in the case of some methods the accuracy of the tree location and especially the tree height determination improves. The low number of hybrid models based on both the laser data and aerial image produced by the partners implies that integration of laser and aerial image is in its early stages.
