[Termes IGN] vectorisationRésumé : (auteur) The purpose of this study was to determine the spatial structure of vegetation on the repository of the mine “Fryderyk” in Tarnowskie Góry. Tested area was located in the Upper Silesian Industrial Region (a large industrial region in Poland). It was a unique refuge habitat – Natura2000; PLH240008. The main aspect of this elaboration was to investigate the possible use of geotechniques and generally available geodata for mapping LULC changes and determining the spatial structure of vegetation. The presented study focuses on the analysis of a spatial structure of vegetation in the research area. This exploration was based on aerial images and orthophotomaps from 1947, 1998, 2003, 2009, 2011 and airborne laser scanning data (2011, ISOK project). Forest succession changes which occurred between 1947 and 2011 were analysed. The selected features of vegetation overgrowing spoil heap “Fryderyk” was determined.
The results demonstrated a gradual succession of greenery on soil heap. In 1947, 84% of this area was covered by low vegetation. Tree expansion was proceeding in the westerly and northwest direction. In 2011 this canopy layer covered almost 50% of the research area. Parameters such as height of vegetation, crowns length and cover density were calculated by an airborne laser scanning data. These analyses indicated significant diversity in vertical and horizontal structures of vegetation. The study presents some capacities to use airborne laser scanning for an impartial evaluation of the structure of vegetation.

[Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Key message : Individual-tree seeding height growth models developed using tree inventory data were comparable to those requiring the unique observation of point-based canopy structure data at each seedling.
Context : Quantitative approaches describing the relationship between canopy structure and seedling growth can inform silvicultural decision making regarding the development of tree reproduction beneath a dominant forest canopy.
Aims : Individual-tree seedling growth models with canopy structure predictors derived from tree inventory data have not been well-explored. This study compared a model framework fit using point-based measures of canopy structure observed at the seedling level to one fit using area-wide canopy structure variables derived from standard inventory plot data.
Methods : Species-specific models predicting 5-year height growth were fit for cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.), water oak (Quercus nigra L.), and yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) underplanted within a canopy structure gradient created by silvicultural manipulation of a closed-canopy forest in Georgia, USA.
Results : Though the species varied in shade tolerance and growth rates, the general relationship between the predictor variables and height growth was similar among species and model type. Models highlight the importance of including predictor variables that describe seedling size along with openness and vertical structure of the forest canopy.
Conclusion : While the two model frameworks had comparable fit statistics, the one with predictors derived from tree inventory data may have enhanced utility as it can be directly integrated into existing individual-tree forest growth simulators.

[Termes IGN] Vancouver (Colombie britannique)Résumé : (auteur) Many forest management activities, including the development of forest inventories, require spatially detailed forest canopy cover and height data. Among the various remote sensing technologies, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) offers the most accurate and consistent means for obtaining reliable canopy structure measurements. A potential solution to reduce the cost of LiDAR data, is to integrate transects (samples) of LiDAR data with frequently acquired and spatially comprehensive optical remotely sensed data. Although multiple regression is commonly used for such modeling, often it does not fully capture the complex relationships between forest structure variables. This study investigates the potential of Random Forest (RF), a machine learning technique, to estimate LiDAR measured canopy structure using a time series of Landsat imagery. The study is implemented over a 2600 ha area of industrially managed coastal temperate forests on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. We implemented a trajectory-based approach to time series analysis that generates time since disturbance (TSD) and disturbance intensity information for each pixel and we used this information to stratify the forest land base into two strata: mature forests and young forests. Canopy cover and height for three forest classes (i.e. mature, young and mature and young (combined)) were modeled separately using multiple regression and Random Forest (RF) techniques. For all forest classes, the RF models provided improved estimates relative to the multiple regression models. The lowest validation error was obtained for the mature forest strata in a RF model (R2 = 0.88, RMSE = 2.39 m and bias = −0.16 for canopy height; R2 = 0.72, RMSE = 0.068% and bias = −0.0049 for canopy cover). This study demonstrates the value of using disturbance and successional history to inform estimates of canopy structure and obtain improved estimates of forest canopy cover and height using the RF algorithm. [Termes IGN] ressources forestièresRésumé : (auteur) We used remotely sensed data from the Landsat-8 and WorldView-2 satellites to estimate vegetation burn severity of the Creek Fire on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, where wildfire occurrences affect the Tribe’s crucial livestock and logging industries. Accurate pre- and post-fire canopy maps at high (0.5-meter) resolution were created from WorldView-2 data to generate canopy loss maps, and multiple indices from pre- and post-fire Landsat-8 images were used to evaluate vegetation burn severity. Normalized difference vegetation index based vegetation burn severity map had the highest correlation coefficients with canopy loss map from WorldView-2. Two distinct approaches - canopy loss mapping from WorldView-2 and spectral index differencing from Landsat-8 - agreed well with the field-based burn severity estimates and are both effective for vegetation burn severity mapping. Canopy loss maps created with WorldView-2 imagery add to a short list of accurate vegetation burn severity mapping techniques that can help guide effective management of forest resources on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, and the broader fire-prone regions of the Southwest.
