[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) This article proposes a solution to special least squares adjustment (LSA) models with a rank-deficient weight matrix, which are commonly encountered in geomatics. The two sources of rank deficiency in weight matrices are discussed: naturally occurring due to the inherent characteristics of LSA mathematical models and artificially induced to eliminate nuisance parameters from LSA estimation. The physical interpretation of the sources of rank deficiency is demonstrated using a case study to solve the problem of 3D line fitting, which is often encountered in geomatics but has not been addressed fully to date. Finally, some geomatics-related applications—mobile lidar system calibration, point cloud registration, and single-photo resection—are discussed along with respective experimental results, to emphasize the need to assess LSA models and their weight matrices to draw inferences regarding the effective contribution of observations. The discussion and results demonstrate the vast applications of this research in geomatics as well as other engineering domains. [Termes IGN] signalisation routièreRésumé : (Auteur) Due to the large volume and high redundancy of point clouds, there are many dilemmas in road-marking extraction algorithms, especially from uneven lidar point clouds. To extract road markings efficiently, this study presents a novel method for handling the uneven density distribution of point clouds and the high reflection intensity of road markings. The method first segments the point-cloud data into blocks perpendicular to the vehicle trajectory. Then it applies the double adaptive intensity-threshold method to extract road markings from road surfaces. Finally, it performs an adaptive spatial density filter based on the density distribution of point-cloud data to remove false road-marking points. The average completeness, correctness, and F measure of road-marking extraction are 0.827, 0.887, and 0.854, respectively, indicating that the proposed method is efficient and robust. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laserRésumé : (auteur) This study proposes a new geometric calibration method for satellite laser altimeters based on waveform matching to solve the problems of poor initial pointing accuracy and a lack of control data. This non-real-time method obtains ground control points without a fixed calibration field. First, a large area with stepped surfaces is chosen from the laser altimetry coverage. Then, the laser echo waveforms are simulated using digital surface model (DSM) data of the stepped features. The real echo waveform attempts to match the simulated echo waveforms through a waveform matching model using a global constraint. Next, the control points of the laser altimeter are obtained through waveform matching. Finally, a geometric calibration model for laser altimeters is proposed to compensate for laser pointing and ranging errors. Two experiments were conducted to verify the calibration method using ICESat/GLAS data and airborne large-footprint laser data. Experimental results confirm that the method is feasible and results in an improvement in the elevation accuracy for the airborne altimeter from 2 to 0.5 m. [Termes IGN] Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation lidar
[Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] In 2018, NASA launched the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission, a high resolution lidar system installed onboard the International Space Station (ISS). It is producing high quality 3D observations of the Earth surface structure, which are highly relevant to study forest ecosystems at a global scale (Qi et al. 2019). GEDI data is composed of 25 m diameter circular footprints for which the waveform of the received energy intensity returned by the ground is recorded. Each GEDI footprint is georeferenced and its positioning accuracy (for version 1 releases) is estimated at 15-20 m in planimetry with a systematic component of 8-10 m and a noise of the order of 8 m (1). A final horizontal geolocation accuracy of 8 m is expected after further processing in the final version (Dubayah et al. 2020). Compared to most other spatial satellites the ISS is much closer to earth, causing more variations in its orientation and altitude. Therefore, geolocating data acquired by ISS sensors is more diffucult than geolocating data aquired by satellites (Dou et al. 2014). An improved geolocation of GEDI data is mandatory to evaluate their quality, by comparison with other earth observation data or field measurements, and to further facilitate their integration in ecosystem monitoring approaches. We propose a method to improve the georeferencing of GEDI footprints using a precise Digital Terrain Model (DTM).
