[Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) We propose a grounded ontological theory of channel networks to categorize features, such as junctions, in road network databases. The theory is grounded, because its primitives can be given an unambiguous interpretation into directly observable qualities of physical road networks, such as supported movements and their medium, connectedness of such media, and turnoff restrictions. The theory provides a very general approach to automatically annotate and integrate road network data from heterogeneous sources, because it rests on application-independent observation principles. We suggest that road network categories such as junctions and roads are based on locomotion affordances. Road network databases can be mapped into our channel network theory, so that instances of roads and junctions can be automatically categorized or checked for consistency by what they afford. In this paper, we introduce affordance-based definitions of a road network and a junction, and show that the definition of latter is satisfied by some of the most common junction types. [Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) Since maps are widely available for many areas around the globe, they provide a valuable resource to help understand other geospatial sources such as to identify roads or to annotate buildings in imagery. To utilize the maps for understanding other geospatial sources, one of the most valuable types of information we need from the map is the road network, because the roads are common features used across different geospatial data sets. Specifically, the set of road intersections of the map provides key information about the road network, which includes the location of the road junctions, the number of roads that meet at the intersections (i.e., connectivity), and the orientations of these roads. The set of road intersections helps to identify roads on imagery by serving as initial seed templates to locate road pixels. Moreover, a conflation system can use the road intersections as reference features (i.e., control point set) to align the map with other geospatial sources, such as aerial imagery or vector data. In this paper, we present a framework for automatically and accurately extracting road intersections from raster maps. Identifying the road intersections is difficult because raster maps typically contain much information such as roads, symbols, characters, or even contour lines. We combine a variety of image processing and graphics recognition methods to automatically separate roads from the raster map and then extract the road intersections. The extracted information includes a set of road intersection positions, the road connectivity, and road orientations. For the problem of road intersection extraction, our approach achieves over 95% precision (correctness) with over 75% recall (completeness) on average on a set of 70 raster maps from a variety of sources. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) An automated method for 3D modelling of complex highway interchanges is presented. Laser data and 2D topographic map data have been combined in an innovative 3D reconstruction procedure. Complex situations as shown in this paper demand knowledge to guide the automatic reconstruction. This knowledge has been used in the fusion procedure to constrain the topological and geometrical properties of the reconstructed 3D model. These additions are needed to take care of the lack of data in occluded areas. Laser data has been segmented and filtered before it is fused with map data. In the surface-growing algorithm combining map and laser points, the laser data is assigned to the corresponding road element. Although results are shown using two specific data sources, the algorithm is designed to be capable of dealing with any polygon-based topographic map and any aerial laser scanner data-set. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, the main theories, which were proposed in a PhD study completed at the Cartography Division of Istanbul Technical University, were presented. This study aimed to develop new approaches for covering the generalization based map design deficiencies of car navigation systems currently in use. For this purpose, commercial car navigation products were examined depending on the technologies that they used for map design. Optimization of the road network data and determination of the land use information of areal data were considered as the problems to be solved in this study and a route dependant generalization process was proposed to add value of current car navigation systems. This approach covered generalization processes applied on both areal and linear objects for optimizing the data presented at detailed level. Another approach, which determines the geometries of the road network interchanges and classifies them automatically, was also presented in this paper. This classification approach aimed to formalize interchanges efficiently to generalize them depending on the aim of the application. Two different methods that define interchanges mathematically were used in this context. Interchanges were defined as matrices and tree structures depending on the requirements of the navigating user in these methods. [Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) Road junctions are important components of a road network. However, they are usually not explicitly modelled in existing road extraction approaches. In this research, road junctions are modelled in detail as area objects and an approach is proposed for their automatic extraction through the use of an existing geospatial database. Prior knowledge derived from a topographic geospatial database is used to facilitate the extraction. A new snake-based approach is proposed that makes use of the "ziplock snake" concept and whose external force is a combination of the gradient vector flow (GVF) force and the balloon force in order to delineate the junction border. Road arm extraction results provide fixed boundary conditions for the proposed snake. The approach was tested using aerial black-and-white Digital Mapping Camera (DMC) ortho-images of 0·1 m ground resolution taken from suburban and rural areas. The results obtained demonstrate the validity of this approach.
