[Termes IGN] International Terrestrial Reference FrameRésumé : (auteur) In a geodetic radio frequency observing system the phase center offsets and phase center variations of ground antennae are a fundamental component of mathematical models of the system observables. In this paper we describe work aimed at improving the DORIS Starec ground antenna phase center definition model. Seven antennas were analyzed in the Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR), a dedicated CNES facility. With respect to the manufacturer specified phase center offset, the measured antennae varied between −6 mm and +4 mm due to manufacturing variations. To solve this problem, discussions were held with the manufacturer, leading to an improvement of the manufacturing process. This work results in a reduction in the scatter to ±1 mm. The phase center position has been kept unchanged and associated phase law has been updated and provided to users of the International DORIS Service (IDS). This phase law is applicable to all Starec antennas (before and after manufacturing process consolidation) and is azimuth independent. An error budget taking into account these updated characteristics has been established for the antenna alone: ±2 mm on the horizontal plane and ±3 mm on the up component, maximum error values for antennas named type C (Saunier et al., 2016) produced with consolidated manufacturing process. Finally the impact of this updated characterization on positioning results has been analyzed and shows a scale offset only of the order of +12 mm for the Terrestrial Reference Frame. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The clutter effect occurs when there is an excessive amount of information in a map or when this information is disorganized. Measurement of clutter is essential to improve the quality of outputs produced using automated cartographic systems. This paper reviews some existing methods for measuring clutter from different research communities, highlighting the lack of suitable methods for use in automated map design. Three use cases are presented to show what kind of clutter measures are needed to go further with the automation of map design, particularly in generalization, in symbol/style specification, and in heterogeneous data integration and visualization. One measure cannot capture all the aspects of clutter, and combination of clutter measures at each step of the whole map design process should be investigated for automated cartography. A research agenda for clutter assessment regarding some specific cartographic processes is provided. [Termes IGN] symbole graphiqueRésumé : (Auteur) For the representation of geographic information, the distortion resulting from map projections and transformations is unwanted but unavoidable. Identical circles systematically arranged on the Earth's ellipsoid have been extensively used to symbolize the map distortion. Despite their effectiveness and popularity, these circles are not explicitly associated with any specific polygons in the map, thus possibly impairing their relevance if the map-readers are interested in particular regions. More importantly, for the map transformation specifically targeting polygons such as the area cartogram, placing the circles completely within the polygons becomes necessary because two neighboring polygons in an area cartogram could have distinctive distortion characteristics. This paper proposes new computer algorithms to enable a map-distortion symbolization approach based on inscribed circles entirely contained in polygons either on a projected 2D plane or on the Earth's ellipsoid. These inscribed circles in polygons (ICIP) are rendered as a series of maximum or equal-sized circles that are spatially exclusive, that is, without overlapping. Compared with the systematically arranged identical circles, the ICIP give cartographers certain flexibility and a new option for the map-distortion symbolization. Two area cartograms and three map projections are provided as examples to illustrate their usage and possible contribution in different mapping scenarios.
