It is part of a one-year project at the Department of Geography, University of Zurich entitled “Research in Support of MGE Map Generalizer”, an effort which is sponsored by Intergraph EHQ through a hardware and software loan. The first half-year period was spent on a systematic assessment of the functions offered by MGMG, and initial suggestions for possible enhancements were made. MGMG is an attractive and interesting product. It is generally easy to use, and the computational performance is adequate two factors which are prerequisites for enabling a truly interactive workflow. In its present state, MGMG is probably most useful for generalizing data at large and medium scales (> 1:50,000), particularly for tasks of building and road generalization. At smaller scales, limitations of symbolization and display facilities presently restrict the applicability of the package. Since symbol size and width does not vary with the zoom level of the working view, it is not possible to visually check for feature overlaps or coalescence. This presents a particular problem to the generalization of point and linear features whose size and width is mainly dictated by symbolization; it does not, however, cause difficulties to the treatment of area features (e.g., land use, forest polygons) at smaller scales. We consider MGMG as an important strategic product in Intergraph's range of software solutions for the mapping and GIS market. There is an ever increasing interest in the market for better generalization functionality which is sadly missing from competitors' products. Most potential mapping customers are in a transition to digital production or have already accomplished it. Thus, the problem of assessing the possible productivity gain by digital over manual techniques has almost become secondary. Nevertheless, we estimate that a productivity gain can already be achieved with the current solution. In terms of the quality of generalization operators and related functions, the present version provides an excellent basis for further enhancement and can be fine-tuned to a maturity with relatively little effort. For the second half of the project term, further research will be pursued concentrating on the specification of possible enhancements with respect to generalization operators as well as functions for design support and quality evaluation. [Termes IGN] point d'appuiRésumé : (Auteur) On présente dans cet article une méthode de modélisation du traitement des images du satellite SPOT ne faisant appel qu'à un seul point d'appui au sol et permettant d'extraire des informations planimétriques. On obtient la position du satellite à partir des équations traduisant la condition de colinéarité. On part d'une orbite initiale issue des données fournies par les éphémérides, et on l'améliore par une résolution itérative, basée sur les moindres carrés. On tient compte des variations d'attitude par l'intermédiaire d'un polynôme du troisième ordre fonction du temps et correspondant aux attitudes dérivées des éphémérides par intégration. Une fois obtenue la position définitive du satellite, on peut tirer les coordonnées planimétriques des équations de colinéarité avec une précision qui atteint 38 m en latitude et 52 m en longitude (valeurs moyennes des erreurs moyennes quadratiques résultant de deux essais), lorsque le point d'appui au sol utilisé dans la modélisation provient de la carte au 1:50000. [Termes IGN] plan cadastralIndex. décimale : 33.30 Photogrammétrie numérique Résumé : (Auteur) Digital data for geographic information systems (GIS) covering large areas can only be acquired fast and with reasonable costs from existing maps. The approaches for the automation of the acquisition often result in a large amount of manual post-processing. In addition they are only suited for maps of low complexity. Therefore the goal of this thesis is the knowledge based automatic extraction of objects from the real world like buildings and roads, ie of "semantic information" from scanned maps. This means: 1- Integration of knowledge about the objects of the real world that are depicted hi the map as well as about their relations, like that roads build up networks, in the interpretation. 2- Representation und use of the knowledge by means of knowledge based methods. Thus the restriction of the existing approaches to the recognition of graphical objects like straight lines, circles, symbols or characters and their assignment to objects from the real world is overcome by additional knowledge and the performance of these approaches is exceeded. The new approach is based on a multi level model. The model comprises the levels binary image of the map, topological vector data, graphical objects and objects from the real world. For each level the contained objects and their relations are described. There also exist relations between the levels. For the application the model is represented using a semantic network. The interpretation is carried out data-driven by searching for objects of the real world as well as model-driven by using the knowledge about the objects of the real world and then- relations to seek and generate new objects. The interpretation therefore flows not only continuously from the binary image to the objects of the real world but also vice versa. The approach has been tested on a part of a Bavarian cadastral map 1 : 1000,showing an urban region and on a rural part of a Bavarian cadastral map 1 : 5000. All parcels and their corresponding numbers have been found in the given parts of the maps. For the first time pavements, roadsides and roads that are not explicitly depicted by symbols in the maps could be recognised in cadastral maps, and road-networks could be constructed. In addition all buildings were recognised in the cadastral map 1 : 1000 and all meadows in the cadastral map 1 : 5000. The results show the applicability of the approach by means of examples. The novelty of the approach lies in the modelling and use of knowledge about the objects of the real world for the automated interpretation of maps.
