[Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (Auteur) Proportional circle maps are a popular method for visualizing quantitative data on a map. Circles are scaled proportionally based on the data provided; larger circles represent larger quantities. The circles require two values, a location and a numeric quantity. For data that have a wide range of values, the resulting map will produce clutter and overlap in which large symbols obscure the information contained in smaller circles. Some previous solutions to this problem are modifying and improving the contrast between symbols, or using stacking algorithms so all symbols are visible. This article proposes the displaced proportional symbol map, which displaces the symbol's location based on the amount of overlap between neighbouring circles. At the same time, it preserves the location of non-overlapping symbols, which distinguishes it from the circular cartogram. The displacement is automated through the proximity stress model algorithm for node overlap removal. This algorithm was originally designed for graph layouts with overlapping nodes, but was modified here for circular symbols and map layout. The result is a map with improved clarity and the ability to add labelling to a cluttered proportional circle map. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) A brief overview is given of the quality control of a 1:25,000 scale topographic map, carried out by the Croatian Geodetic Institute (CGI). As the topic of the aesthetics of the topographic map has, in the authors’ opinion, not been extensively covered, the paper concentrates on this topic. The paper focuses on devising an aesthetic standard relating mainly to the representation of relief. In fact, aesthetics can be controlled indirectly in terms of relief and water course alignment, the smoothness of contour lines, the non-existence of bonded contour lines and rock representation justification. A comparison between quality control at the CGI and quality elements according to contemporary standards was carried out. The presence of data-quality elements was registered in accordance with the ISO guidelines. A proposal for several data-quality measures for aesthetics related to relief representation is also given. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article demonstrates a working method to automatically detect and prune portions of waterbody polygons to support creation of a multi-scale hydrographic database. Water features are sensitive to scale change, therefore multiple representations are required to maintain visual and geographic logic at smaller scales. Partial pruning of polygonal features – such as long, sinuous reservoir arms, stream channels too narrow at the target scale, and islands that begin to coalesce – entails concurrent management of the length and width of polygonal features as well as integrating pruned polygons with other generalized point and linear hydrographic features to maintain stream network connectivity. The implementation follows data representation standards developed by the US Geological Survey (USGS) for the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Portions of polygonal rivers, streams, and canals are automatically characterized for width, length, and connectivity. This article describes an algorithm for automatic detection and subsequent processing, and shows results for a sample of NHD subbasins in different landscape conditions in the US. [Termes IGN] sémiologie graphiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Elevation change is critical for choosing a route when bicycling. We detail an empirical study in which we comparatively evaluated three linear symbolization types (color hue, color-coded arrows, and elevation profiles) to depict elevation change in bicycle maps for two common bicycle route planning tasks: relative height detection and slope identification. Participants performed most accurately with the color-coded arrows for relative height detection tasks, whereas symbolization did not significantly influence map-use performance for slope identification. Participants preferred the elevation profile, in spite of their lowest performance with this method overall. Our rare empirical findings offer much needed new insights into the function and appropriateness of common elevation symbolization methods, specifically to identify elevation change in bicycle route planning tasks in urban areas where map display real estate is already very limited.
