[Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (auteur) The traditional hill-shading map is usually produced from a digital elevation model (DEM) by using the method of hypsometric tinting, which is capable of demonstrating the changes in geomorphology by setting the colors for hill-shading. However, the disadvantage is obvious that the surface features of the terrain can only be utilized by putting vector data on the map. Hence, the terrain display effect will be altered, especially in the production of large-scale maps, for which the artistic effect will be greatly weakened. This paper proposes a solution to this problem. First, we transform the RGB color space of the Digital orthophotographic map (DOM) image into the intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) color space. Then, we calculate the new value of the intensity as I′ for each pixel of the shaded relief model (SRM) of the high-resolution remote sensing image. Finally, we replace the component I with the new component I′ and then proceed with the inverse IHS transform. The case study shows that an objective representation of the actual situation is presented in the mapping area, and the 3D performance capabilities are enhanced. This research indicates that when the method of fusing the processed SRM with the IHS color system is used, the optimum index factor (OIF) and entropy of the generated map are 41.26 and 12.05, respectively, which are much greater than for the results of the traditional method. In other words, the proposed method can greatly enhance the terrain effect. [Termes IGN] rizièreRésumé : (auteur) Paddy rice agriculture is practiced in both rain-fed and irrigated ecosystems in the Philippines. However, small farms are prevalent in the region, and current satellite-based mapping techniques do not distinguish between the two ecosystems at farm scales. This study developed an approach to rapidly map irrigated and rain-fed paddy rice in Iloilo, Philippines at 10 m resolutions using Google Earth Engine. This approach used an ensemble of classifiers based on time-series vegetation indices to produce dry and wet seasonal maps for the entire province. Results showed a predominance of rain-fed rice areas in both seasons, with irrigated rice making up only one-fourth of the total rice area. The overall accuracy was achieved at 68% for the dry season and 75% for the wet season based on ground-acquired points and very high-resolution imagery. The two types of paddies were classified at accuracies up to 87%. Furthermore, the land cover maps showed a strong agreement with the municipal statistics. The resultant maps complement current official statistics and demonstrate the prowess of phenology-based mapping to create paddy inventories in a timely manner to inform food security and agricultural policies. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The integration of field surveys, bibliographic research and multitemporal analysis of historical maps, aerial photographs and satellite images in a GIS environment, allowed the current and past geomorphological features of the old city of Alessandria and its surrounding areas, NW Italy, to be identified and mapped. Their analysis provided an overview of the geomorphological evolution of the city that is strictly related to the historical vicissitudes occurred since the Middle Ages. Nowadays, the most representative landforms and deposits characterizing the urban landscape result from human interventions and are associated with ancient military facilities and infrastructures, a historical man-made channel network no longer recognizable, the Tanaro riverbed channelization, and the urban sprawl occurred from the second half of the nineteenth century onwards. This study represents a useful tool for urban planning and management and for raising the citizens’ awareness of the urban-landscape geomorphological features and evolution, and therefore the geo-hydrological risk. [Termes IGN] précision cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Upscaled maps, as necessary data sources, have drawn much attention to fill data gaps or match the spatial resolution of pre-existing projects. Nevertheless, it remains a challenging task to quantitatively assess the impact of landscape characteristics on the upscaled maps. To simplify the investigation, three characteristics: fragmentation, number of classes and major class impact factor (MCIF), were selected. We utilized SIMMAP to produce categorical maps for generating base maps with different landscape characteristics. The Majority Rule Based algorithm was then used to produce upscaled maps at 11 different spatial resolutions. The findings indicate that the combined effect of landscape patterns greatly impacts upscaling accuracy. This important result should be carefully considered when developing the next generation of upscaling techniques. Overall, extending our understanding of the impacts of landscape characteristics is a critical step forward improving upscaling accuracy and therefore, our use of these maps. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The legends of natural resource taxonomy-based maps (e.g. soil, geological, geomorphological, vegetation, and land cover/land use) need many different distinguishable colors. The existing methods of color selection for map legends are based on the designer subjectivity, ensuring schemes having few colors. An analysis of the modeling and management of colors in digital applications has led to define an algorithm to calculate an objective colorimetric measure of color difference – “DE*ab” – based on the perceptually uniform color model CIELAB. The proposed method consists of a set of specific rules for developing hierarchically structured color schemes and a specific procedure for ensuring selection of a large number of reliably distinguishable colors, based on a color difference threshold. The accuracy of color reproduction in printing processes is also taken into account. The method has been applied to develop a standard of colors for soil maps. It contains 63 colors and has been used for developing a soil map having 41 standard colors. A user test of the method results proved that thresholds of 10 DE*ab units and 15 DE*ab units ensure obtaining acceptably distinguishable colors for displaying/printing maps by using high-quality, respectively, current devices.
