[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Information about urban land use is important for urban planning and sustainable development. The emergence of geospatial big data (GBD), increased the availability of remotely sensed (RS) data and the development of new methods for data integration to provide new opportunities for mapping types of urban land use. However, the modes of RS and GBD integration are diverse due to the differences in data, study areas, classifiers, etc. In this context, this study aims to summarize the main methods of data integration and evaluate them via a case study of urban land use mapping in Hangzhou, China. We first categorized the RS and GBD integration methods into decision-level integration (DI) and feature-level integration (FI) and analyzed their main differences by reviewing the existing literature. The two methods were then applied for mapping urban land use types in Hangzhou city, based on urban parcels derived from the OpenStreetMap (OSM) road network, 10 m Sentinel-2A images, and points of interest (POI). The corresponding classification results were validated quantitatively and qualitatively using the same testing dataset. Finally, we illustrated the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches via bibliographic evidence and quantitative analysis. The results showed that: (1) The visual comparison indicates a generally better performance of DI-based classification than FI-based classification; (2) DI-based urban land use mapping is easy to implement, while FI-based land use mapping enables the mixture of features; (3) DI-based and FI-based methods can be used together to improve urban land use mapping, as they have different performances when classifying different types of land use. This study provides an improved understanding of urban land use mapping in terms of the RS and GBD integration strategy. [Termes IGN] ruissellementRésumé : (Auteur) The accurate estimation of terrain characteristics is central in rainfall runoff modelling. In this study, influences of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) obtained from different sources, resolutions and rescaling techniques are compared for Peak flow prediction in a large-scale watershed by the Topographic driven model (TOPMODEL). The comparison includes graphical representation and statistical assessments using daily time series data. As a result, DEM extracted from contour map (DEM-Con) showed better performance when DEM resolutions increased, but the Advanced Space-borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (DEM-Aster) continued to achieve less Relative Error (RE) at low resolution. Moreover, better RE values were found at cubic convolution technique to predict the peaks followed by nearest neighbor and bilinear. In addition, this study indicated that DEM resolution is more sensitive factor for TOPMODEL simulation compared to DEM sources and rescaling techniques for streamflow and peaks prediction. [Termes IGN] toundraRésumé : (auteur) Open access airborne laser scanning (ALS) data have been available in Finland for over a decade and have been actively applied by the Finnish archaeologists in that time. The low resolution of this laser scanning 2008–2019 dataset (0.5 points/m2), however, has hindered its usability for archaeological prospection. In the summer of 2020, the situation changed markedly, when the Finnish National Land Survey started a new countrywide ALS survey with a higher resolution of 5 points/m2. In this paper we present the first results of applying this newly available ALS material for archaeological studies. Finnish LIDARK consortium has initiated the development of semi-automated approaches for visualizing, detecting, and analyzing archaeological features with this new dataset. Our first case studies are situated in the Alpine tundra environment of Sápmi in northern Finland, and the assessed archaeological features range from prehistoric sites to indigenous Sámi reindeer herding features and Second Word War-era German military structures. Already the initial analyses of the new ALS-5p data show their huge potential for locating, mapping, and assessing archaeological material. These results also suggest an imminent burst in the number of known archaeological sites, especially in the poorly accessible and little studied northern wilderness areas, when more data become available. [Termes IGN] rendement agricoleRésumé : (auteur) Accurately mapping croplands is an important prerequisite for precision farming since it assists in field management, yield-prediction, and environmental management. Crops are sensitive to planting patterns and some have a limited capacity to compensate for gaps within a row. Optical imaging with sensors mounted on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) is a cost-effective option for capturing images covering croplands nowadays. However, visual inspection of such images can be a challenging and biased task, specifically for detecting plants and rows on a one-step basis. Thus, developing an architecture capable of simultaneously extracting plant individually and plantation-rows from UAV-images is yet an important demand to support the management of agricultural systems. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning method based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that simultaneously detects and geolocates plantation-rows while counting its plants considering highly-dense plantation configurations. The experimental setup was evaluated in (a) a cornfield (Zea mays L.) with different growth stages (i.e. recently planted and mature plants) and in a (b) Citrus orchard (Citrus Sinensis Pera). Both datasets characterize different plant density scenarios, in different locations, with different types of crops, and from different sensors and dates. This scheme was used to prove the robustness of the proposed approach, allowing a broader discussion of the method. A two-branch architecture was implemented in our CNN method, where the information obtained within the plantation-row is updated into the plant detection branch and retro-feed to the row branch; which are then refined by a Multi-Stage Refinement method. In the corn plantation datasets (with both growth phases – young and mature), our approach returned a mean absolute error (MAE) of 6.224 plants per image patch, a mean relative error (MRE) of 0.1038, precision and recall values of 0.856, and 0.905, respectively, and an F-measure equal to 0.876. These results were superior to the results from other deep networks (HRNet, Faster R-CNN, and RetinaNet) evaluated with the same task and dataset. For the plantation-row detection, our approach returned precision, recall, and F-measure scores of 0.913, 0.941, and 0.925, respectively. To test the robustness of our model with a different type of agriculture, we performed the same task in the citrus orchard dataset. It returned an MAE equal to 1.409 citrus-trees per patch, MRE of 0.0615, precision of 0.922, recall of 0.911, and F-measure of 0.965. For the citrus plantation-row detection, our approach resulted in precision, recall, and F-measure scores equal to 0.965, 0.970, and 0.964, respectively. The proposed method achieved state-of-the-art performance for counting and geolocating plants and plant-rows in UAV images from different types of crops. The method proposed here may be applied to future decision-making models and could contribute to the sustainable management of agricultural systems.
