[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) has emerged as an effective and evolving paradigm for analyzing very high resolution (VHR) images as it demonstrates preeminence over the traditional pixel-wise methods and enables the utilization of diverse spectral, geometrical, and textural information to for image classification. Among feature selection (FS) methods, metaheuristic FS techniques have recently demonstrated effective performance in the dimensionality reduction of GEOBIA features. In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) was integrated with particle swarm optimization (PSO) to enhance the learning process and more effectively determine the most significant features and their importance using WorldView-3 (WV-3) satellite data. First, multi-resolution image segmentation parameters were tuned using Taguchi optimization technique and unsupervised segmentation quality measure. Second, the proposed ANN–PSO was compared with PSO under 100 iterations. The ANN–PSO integration achieved lower root mean square error (RMSE) in all the iterations. Third, state-of-the-art extreme gradient boosting (Xgboost) image classifier was used to derive the land use/land cover (LULC) map of the first study area and assess the transferability of the selected features on the second and third regions. The Xgboost classifier obtained 91.68%, 89.54%, and 89.33% overall accuracies for the first, second, and third sites, respectively. ANN contributed to an intelligent approach for identifying which features are more likely to be relevant and discriminate the land cover types. The proposed integrated FS is a promising approach and an efficient tool for determining significant features and enhancing the detection of urban LULC classes from WV-3 data. Two case studies, of different elevation, from Romania were selected to be considered for setting up some observation points as lookout points. Fuzzy viewshed analysis was performed to evaluate the degree of visibility of certain landscape components and was also used as a tool for territorial planning. The main results of the research were some particular viewshed analysis area according to the dominant visibility directions. This methodology may be useful to local authorities, which are the only responsible bodies for authorizing, creating and setting up lookout points in a given space or for organizing certain planning activities. Mainly, natural conditions and human manipulations have made soils extremely prone to soil erosion. Therefore, information on soil erosion status is of paramount importance to the policymakers for land conservation planning in a limited time. Spatial information systems like GIS and RS are known for their efficiencies. With that prospect, the GIS-based RUSLE model is used in this study to assess the soil erosion losses from Bhandara regions of Maharashtra, India. The study area comes under Wainganga sub-river basin, a portion of the Godavari River basin. We have prepared the required five potential parameters (R*K*LS*C*P) of RUSLE model on pixel-to-pixel basis. We have prepared the R factor map from monthly rainfall data of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and K factor map by digital the soil series map of NBSS & LUP, Govt. of India. We have used the digital elevation model data (DEM) of Cartosat-1 for LS-factor map, Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2A satellite dataset to generate LULC and NDVI map to obtain C and P factors. The results and satellite data were validated using Google Earth Pro and field observations. The results showed significant soil erosion from the river banks and wastelands near water bodies, with the soil loss values ranging between 20 and 40 t ha−1 yr−1. The identification of existing farm tree species is important for long term management strategies to provide ecosystem stability in the region. This study explored the feasibility of structural attributes of LiDAR and spectral and spatial characteristics of high resolution remote sensing data to identify and map Eucalyptus tree species. An object based image segmentation and rule-based classification algorithm were developed to delineate tree boundaries and species classification. The integration of two datasets improved the classification accuracy (65%) against their separate classification (52% and 41%, respectively). The identification of tree species will help in getting first-hand information on existing farm trees, which may be used in assessing tree condition in time series related to management practices and complex dieback problem. [Termes IGN] ZambieRésumé : (auteur) In sub-Saharan Africa, protected areas provide a platform for conserving biodiversity. However, these areas are facing massive pressure due to deforestation, and information on forest dynamics and factors driving the changes in protected areas is generally lacking. This study has two objectives: (1) to assess forest cover changes that have occurred between 1972 and 2016 in Copperbelt Province’s protected areas, and (2) understand the drivers of forest cover changes. The study used thematic land cover maps for six selected years, which were classified using an object-based image analysis (OBIA) approach. We also applied a Classification Tree (CT) approach to assess the drivers of forest cover changes using R statistical software. The findings showed that forest cover in protected areas has been characterised by massive deforestation due to various factors. Between 1972 and 2016, primary and secondary forests showed a decrease of 2,226.43 km2 (11.06%) and an increase of 1,082.93 km2 (4.05%), respectively. The major factors driving forest changes include the levels of precipitation, human population density, elevation, distance from roads, towns and rivers. This study presents consistent information for long-term forest monitoring in protected areas, and informs decision-makers on the levels of deforestation and their drivers for effective forest management.
