[Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (auteur) Accurate and detailed geographical information digitizing human activity patterns plays an essential role in response to natural disasters. Volunteered geographical information, in particular OpenStreetMap (OSM), shows great potential in providing the knowledge of human settlements to support humanitarian aid, while the availability and quality of OSM remains a major concern. The majority of existing works in assessing OSM data quality focus on either extrinsic or intrinsic analysis, which is insufficient to fulfill the humanitarian mapping scenario to a certain degree. This paper aims to explore OSM missing built-up areas from an integrative perspective of social sensing and remote sensing. First, applying hierarchical DBSCAN clustering algorithm, the clusters of geo-tagged tweets are generated as proxies of human active regions. Then a deep learning based model fine-tuned on existing OSM data is proposed to further map the missing built-up areas. Hit by Cyclone Idai and Kenneth in 2019, the Republic of Mozambique is selected as the study area to evaluate the proposed method at a national scale. As a result, 13 OSM missing built-up areas are identified and mapped with an over 90% overall accuracy, being competitive compared to state-of-the-art products, which confirms the effectiveness of the proposed method. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Small‐area patch merging is a common operation in land use data generalization. However, existing research on small‐area patch merging has mainly focused on local compatibility measures, which often lead to area imbalances among land use types from a global perspective. To address the shortcomings of previous studies by resolving local and global concerns simultaneously, this article proposes a merging method that considers both local constraints and the overall area balance. First, a local optimization model that considers three constraints—namely, the areas of neighboring patches, the lengths of shared arcs, and semantic similarity—is established. The areas of small patches are first pre‐allocated. Subsequently, in accordance with an area change threshold for individual land use types, land use types with area changes that exceed this threshold are identified. The patches corresponding to these land use types are subjected to iterative adjustments while considering the overall area balance. Based on their area splitting abilities, the split lines for small‐area patches are determined, and small‐area patches are merged. Finally, actual data from Guangdong Province are used for validation. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of preserving the local compatibility of patches while balancing the overall area associated with each land use type. [Termes IGN] vectorisationRésumé : (auteur) National historical map resources are assessed in four European countries to characterize river corridor features and associated channel changes, as well as identify issues limiting or promoting geomorphic assessment procedures at a continental scale. A geomorphic audit that launches potential data for diagnosis from reach to continental scales could offer a good resource for biology and ecology managers of river authorities or government agencies and engineers. The assessment compares the resources available by country in terms of period covered, spatial scale, history and chronology, and representation of the fluvial corridor features. We then applied the Historical Maps Vectorization Toolbox, initially developed for vectorizing river corridors from French maps, to detect and extract flow channels, unvegetated bars and riparian vegetation patches from historical topographical maps. We found that (a) it is difficult to apply an audit of channel changes to the whole continental scale because map legends differ between countries due to geographic and political specificity; (b) there exists an opportunity to get assessment information in all countries at reach or national scale where map resources are available; (c) the highest potential is observed in Switzerland and Belgium where there is high quality national map coverage from the 19th century; and (d) the algorithm Historical Maps Vectorization Toolbox applied to map resources works well with any of the countries, and its widespread application is encouraging.
