[Termes IGN] vectorisationRésumé : (auteur) National historical map resources are assessed in four European countries to characterize river corridor features and associated channel changes, as well as identify issues limiting or promoting geomorphic assessment procedures at a continental scale. A geomorphic audit that launches potential data for diagnosis from reach to continental scales could offer a good resource for biology and ecology managers of river authorities or government agencies and engineers. The assessment compares the resources available by country in terms of period covered, spatial scale, history and chronology, and representation of the fluvial corridor features. We then applied the Historical Maps Vectorization Toolbox, initially developed for vectorizing river corridors from French maps, to detect and extract flow channels, unvegetated bars and riparian vegetation patches from historical topographical maps. We found that (a) it is difficult to apply an audit of channel changes to the whole continental scale because map legends differ between countries due to geographic and political specificity; (b) there exists an opportunity to get assessment information in all countries at reach or national scale where map resources are available; (c) the highest potential is observed in Switzerland and Belgium where there is high quality national map coverage from the 19th century; and (d) the algorithm Historical Maps Vectorization Toolbox applied to map resources works well with any of the countries, and its widespread application is encouraging. [Termes IGN] Valence (Espagne)Résumé : (auteur) Triangulation is a surveying method on which earlier maps made were based. Although the origins of the method can be traced back to the 16th century, it is still used today, with minor changes, to adjust networks observed with modern geodetic techniques. In this paper we present the geodetic survey work that was carried out for the primary triangulation network of the first 1:500 urban map of the city of València (Spain). It spanned from 1929 to 1944 and resulted in 421 maps covering about 174 square kilometres. We focus on four key elements to define the geometric framework of a map: (1) the geodetic network, (2) the cartographic projection, (3) the baseline measurements, and (4) the primary triangulation. The paper is based on the interpretation of original documents and field books recovered from the archives of the València City Council. In order to check the accuracy and consistency of the survey work, we recomputed all calculations directly from the field data, following the mathematical procedures of the time. We obtained a set of transformation parameters to convert the coordinates of 1929 to current coordinates based on the European Terrestrial Reference System of 1989 (ETRS89). Results showed that the 1929 primary triangulation angles and coordinates are accurate to 8 s of arc and 35 cm respectively, and that the coordinates transform well into the current reference system with average residuals of 26 cm across nine control points, demonstrating the high quality of the 1929 work. [Termes IGN] vision par ordinateurRésumé : (auteur) Road intersection data have been used across a range of geospatial analyses. However, many datasets dating from before the advent of GIS are only available as historical printed maps. To be analyzed by GIS software, they need to be scanned and transformed into a usable (vector-based) format. Because the number of scanned historical maps is voluminous, automated methods of digitization and transformation are needed. Frequently, these processes are based on computer vision algorithms. However, the key challenges to this are (1) the low conversion accuracy for low quality and visually complex maps, and (2) the selection of optimal parameters. In this paper, we used a region-based deep convolutional neural network-based framework (RCNN) for object detection, in order to automatically identify road intersections in historical maps of several cities in the United States of America. We found that the RCNN approach is more accurate than traditional computer vision algorithms for double-line cartographic representation of the roads, though its accuracy does not surpass all traditional methods used for single-line symbols. The results suggest that the number of errors in the outputs is sensitive to complexity and blurriness of the maps, and to the number of distinct red-green-blue (RGB) combinations within them.
