Authors from every region of the world who have emerged as leaders in the YouthMappers movement share their perspectives and knowledge in an accessible and peer-friendly format. YouthMappers are university students who create and use open mapping for development and humanitarian purposes. Their work leverages digital innovations - both geospatial platforms and communications technologies - to answer the call for leadership to address sustainability challenges. The book conveys a sense of robust knowledge emerging from formal studies or informal academic experiences - in the first-person voices of students and recent graduates who are at the forefront of creating a new map of the world. YouthMappers use OpenStreetMap as the foundational sharing mechanism for creating data together. Authors impart the way they are learning about themselves, about each other, about the world. They are developing technology skills, and simultaneously teaching the rest of the world about the potential contributions of a highly connected generation of emerging world leaders for the SDGs. The book is timely, in that it captures a pivotal moment in the trajectory of the YouthMappers movement’s ability to share emerging expertise, and one that coincides with a pivotal moment in the geopolitical history of planet earth whose inhabitants need to hear from them. Most volumes that cover the topic of sustainability in terms of youth development are written by non-youth authors. Moreover, most are written by non-majoritarian, entrenched academic scholars. This book instead puts forward the diverse voices of students and recent graduates in countries where YouthMappers works, all over the world. Authors cover topics that range from water, agriculture, food, to waste, education, gender, climate action and disasters from their own eyes in working with data, mapping, and humanitarian action, often working across national boundaries and across continents. To inspire readers with their insights, the chapters are mapped to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in ways that connect a youth agenda to a global agenda. Many web platforms and location-based services are offering increasing opportunities, paper maps have been largely supplemented by multimedia and digital maps, and spatial databases. The definition of a map has changed throughout history and the differences in their definitions are presented. This paper aims for new central cartographic definitions, corresponding to contemporary cartographic development after presenting the current situation of the topic. Definitions of cartographic mapping, cartography and cartographer are proposed, as well as a new definition of the map. This paper concentrates on unsolved issues in SDIs in Europe related to the management of semantic heterogeneities. It studies contributions and competences from two communities in this field: cartographers, authoritative data providers, and geographic information scientists on the one hand, and computer scientists working on the Web of Data on the other. During several workshops organized by the EuroSDR and Eurogeographics organizations, the authors analyzed their complementarity and discovered reasons for the difficult collaboration between these communities. They have different and sometimes conflicting perspectives on what successful SDIs should look like, as well as on priorities. We developed a proposal to integrate both perspectives, which is centered on the elaboration of an open European Geographical Knowledge Graph. Its structure reuses results from the literature on geographical information ontologies. It is associated with a multifaceted roadmap addressing interrelated aspects of SDIs. This article presents an empirical study that looks at the question of how prosumers and cartographers use the graphical variables developed by Jacques Bertin in 1967 for cartographic communication. The findings suggest that both prosumers and trained cartographers mainly use the graphical variables colour hue and shape. Trained cartographers additionally use the graphical variables size and colour value to represent ordinal, nominal, and numerical data. The persistence of this difference speaks to the continued importance of cartographic training for effective cartographic communication. Un bon cartographe doit non seulement en maîtriser les aspects scientifiques et techniques, mais doit également mettre en œuvre des compétences artistiques dans le choix des traits, des couleurs et des écritures. Toutes les cartes sont prévues pour être utilisées, soit pour la randonnée ou la navigation routière, soit pour décrire l'aménagement du territoire ou pour la recherche d'informations dans un atlas. Les cartes sont d'une grande utilité et elles n'ont jamais auparavant été publiées par un si grand nombre de moyens de diffusion. La carte est un moyen de communication efficace entre un producteur et un utilisateur, et grâce au GPS, beaucoup de choses peuvent être localisées sur la carte. Pendant longtemps, le papier a été la matière la plus utilisée pour les cartes. De nos jours, la plupart des cartes sont réalisées grâce à des logiciels cartographiques et sont distribuées sur le net, mais les règles cartographiques restent identiques quel que soit le mode de diffusion. Dans cet article, nous décrirons comment les cartes sont conçues et utilisées, et de quelle façon elles sont distribuées, ainsi que la méthode pour obtenir les données nécessaires.
