[Termes IGN] Yunnan (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) Mapping dominant vegetation communities is important work for vegetation scientists. It is very difficult to map dominant vegetation communities using multispectral remote sensing data only, especially in mountain areas. However plant community data contain useful information about the relationships between plant communities and their environment. In this paper, plant community data are linked with remote sensing to map vegetation communities. The Bayesian soft classifier was used to produce posterior probability images for each class. These images were used to calculate the prior probabilities. One hundred and eighty plant plots at Meili Snow Mountain, Yunnan Province, China were used to characterize the vegetation distribution for each class along altitude gradients. Then, the frequencies were used to modify the prior probabilities of each class. After stratification in a vegetation part and a non-vegetation part, a maximum-likelihood classification with equal prior probabilities was conducted, yielding an overall accuracy of 82.1% and a kappa accuracy of 0.797. Maximum-likelihood classification with modified prior probabilities in the vegetation part, conducted with a conventional maximum-likelihood classification for the non-vegetation part, yielded an overall accuracy of 87.7%, and a kappa accuracy of 0.861. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Small-footprint full-waveform airborne laser scanning (ALS) is a remote sensing technique capable of mapping vegetation in three dimensions with a spatial sampling of about 0.5-2 m in all directions. This is achieved by scanning the laser beam across the Earth's surface and by emitting nanosecond-long infrared pulses with a high frequency of typically 50-150 kHz. The echo signals are digitized during data acquisition for subsequent off-line waveform analysis. In addition to delivering the three-dimensional (3D) coordinates of scattering objects such as leaves or branches, full-waveform laser scanners can be calibrated for measuring the scattering properties of vegetation and terrain surfaces in a quantitative way. As a result, a number of physical observables are obtained, such as the width of the echo pulse and the backscatter cross-section, which is a measure of the electromagnetic energy intercepted and re-radiated by objects. The main aim of this study was to build up an understanding of the scattering characteristics of vegetation and the underlying terrain. It was found that vegetation typically causes a broadening of the backscattered pulse, while the backscatter cross-section is usually smaller for canopy echoes than for terrain echoes. These scattering properties allowed classification of the 3D point cloud into vegetation and non-vegetation echoes with an overall accuracy of 89.9% for a dense natural forest and 93.7% for a baroque garden area. In addition, by removing the vegetation echoes before the filtering process, the quality of the digital terrain model could be improved. [Termes IGN] système d'information foncièreRésumé : (Auteur) The Hellenic Cadastre Program (HCP) of Greece aims at developing a modern cadastral system for the first time in the Hellenic history. This paper is focused on the issues related to cadastral forestlands digital mapping, an indispensable part of HCP. Mapping the forestlands is a challenge of multiple disciplines. It includes photogrammetry, photointerpretation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and a clear understanding of the current institutional and legislative setting. The process requires both historical and current information pertaining to land-cover in order to identify forestland changes over time. Historical and current digital orthoimagery is generated through photogrammetric operations. Forestlands are delineated in a spatiotemporal environment; state property rights in forestlands are allocated and land ownership is established within the framework of HCP. This paper demonstrates that the integration of airborne remote sensing and collateral data with a GIS is an effective approach for cadastral forest mapping. The produced GIS databases and large-scale Forest Maps may serve as a data foundation towards a land register of forests.
