[Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Choropleth maps are often used to visualize the spatial distribution of information collected for enumeration units. Such maps, however, are normally produced without considering the effect of uncertainty associated with data, which can contribute to incorrect interpretation. The purpose of this paper is to develop a method that can be used to evaluate the classification robustness of choropleth maps when the attribute uncertainty associated with the data is known or can be estimated. We first develop a measure to indicate the robustness of classification schemes. We then design a set of experiments to examine the robustness of different choropleth map classifications under various levels and types of uncertainty. Our experiments suggest that the robustness of a choropleth classification scheme is a function of uncertainty and the number of classes used. Increases in data uncertainty will decrease map robustness. However, it is possible to increase map robustness by choosing a smaller number of classes. We also discuss a visualization approach that can be used to display the classification robustness of each enumeration unit within a choropleth map. [Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (Auteur) We develop a linear time method for transforming clusters of 2D-point data into area data while identifying the shape robustly. This method translates a data layer into a space filling layer where shaped clusters are identified as the resulting regions. The method is based on robustly identifying cluster boundaries in point data using the Delaunay Diagram. The method can then be applied to modelling point data, to displaying choropleth maps of point data without a reference map, to identifying association rules in the spatial dimension for geographical data mining, or to measuring a gap between clusters for cluster validity. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Exploratory data analysis and geovisualization have opened new paths for displaying and analyzing data. Alternate views of the same data set provide more insight into the nature of the data. The choropleth map has been the primary display device for portraying the spatial distribution of statistical data aggregated over areal units. However, the standard choropleth map is not as informative with respect to the statistical distribution of the data. Data classification for classed choropleth maps, as well as the transformation of numeric values into lightness values, filters out much of the information regarding the underlying statistical distribution of the data. Traditionally, the map legend has the role of connecting lightness values to their numeric counterparts and providing some information regarding the statistical properties of the data. It is proposed here that a more versatile legend can be constructed based on the ogive cumulative frequency diagram. Ogive legends can present the overall statistical distribution of data in its natural state without resorting to data aggregation, as do histograms and other frequency diagrams. Furthermore, ogive legends can display the distribution of data within any individual class interval. [Termes IGN] régression géographiquement pondéréeRésumé : (Auteur) Geographically weighted regression (GWR) is a local spatial statistical technique for exploring spatial nonstationarity. Previous approaches to mapping the results of GWR have primarily employed an equal step classification and sequential no-hue colour scheme for choropleth mapping of parameter estimates. This cartographic approach may hinder the exploration of spatial nonstationarity by inadequately illustrating the spatial distribution of the sign, magnitude, and significance of the influence of each explanatory variable on the dependent variable. Approaches for improving mapping of the results of GWR are illustrated using a case study analysis of population density-median home value relationships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. These approaches employ data classification schemes informed by the (nonspatial) data distribution, diverging colour schemes, and bivariate choropleth mapping. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a methodology to assess gradation as a cartographic tool for communicating information in area-class maps. The communication model is used as a theoretical foundation, suggesting distinction between errors that occur in encoding and decoding of geographic information. The proposed methodology begins with the determination of a target level of encoding error. Map alternatives are constrained to achieve this target, with gradation considered as one variable in the map production process. The result is a series of maps of equal encoding accuracy but varying in the degree of gradation represented. The individual maps of the series can then be evaluated in terms of decoding accuracy. The methodology is demonstrated by producing a series of alternative forest region maps of New York, Pennsylvania, and New jersey based on U.S. Forest Service data on tree genus distributions. The series ranges from a 4-class graded area-class map to a 13-class crisp map. The results show gradation to be a viable alternative to the proliferation of map classes as a means of cartographic communication.
