[Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Choropleth maps can be used to compare the patterns exhibited by different spatial variables. In this paper, we develop an evolutionary algorithm that can be used to generate classifications that allow a user to explore the spatial patterns of multiple choropleth maps in terms of their visual correlation and the equality of area contained in each class. Synthetic and census data are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. [Termes IGN] contraste de couleursRésumé : (Auteur) Traditionally, choropleth maps are used to examine spatial patterns present in a data distribution rather than to examine specific data values within that distribution. The transformation of initial numeric data values into graphic values for visual display differs for classed and unclassed maps. Classed maps first group data into classification intervals and each interval is then assigned a graphic value usually using the principle maximum constrast. Unclassed maps skip the classification step and directly, assign graphic value based on the original numeric data value. The paper examines the differences in defining algebraic-to-graphic transformation lines for both classed and unclassed maps and espacially the role of the maximum contrast principle in constructing classed choropleth maps. Result show that the maximum contrast principle increases the visual complexity, of spatial patterns in classed map over the level present in a corresponding unclassed map. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a pixel-based technique that enables highly interactive Web choropleth maps for georeferenced data publishing and visual exploration. Instead of delivering geographic knowledge to the client in polygon-based vector formats, we encode geographic object IDs and shape information into highly compact pixel images (decoding maps). This allows the combination of raster and vector characteristics while avoiding the problems in the currently existing pixel-based (raster-lmage -based) or vector-based techniques. Differing from traditional pixel-based techniques that are static and allow very little user interaction, our pixel-based technique allows varieties of sub-second (less than 1 s) interface controls such as dynamic query, dynamic classification, geographic object data identification, user-setting adjusting, as well as turning on/off layers, panning and zooming, with no or minimum server support. Compared with Web GIS techniques that use vector geographic data, our technique avoids transferring over the network large vector geographic data. It also avoids the non-trivial client-side computation to interpret the vector data and render the maps. Our technique features a short initial download time, near-constant performance scalability for larger numbers of geographic objects, and download-map-segment- only-when-necessary which potentially reduces the overall data transfer over the network. As a result, it accommodates general public users with slow modem network connections and low-end machines, as well as users with fast T-1 connections and fast machines. The client-side (browser) is implemented as lightweight Java applets. YMap, an easy-to-use, user-task-oriented highly interactive mapping tool for visual georeferenced data exploration is implemented using this technique. The performance comparison of YMap to some other vector-based Web GIS demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of this technique. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents the use of the frequency histogram legend (FHL) as a substitute to traditional legends in both classed and unclassed maps. Great variation in the size of mapping units can hinder reader's ability to comprehend statistical distributions from a choropleth map. Replacing conventional legends with FHL can aid readers i their understanding of spatial as well as statistical distributions of the mapped data sumultaneously. A custumized mapping application was designed in ArcInfo 9.0 to test the use of FHL in both classed and unclassed choropleth maps. Frequency histogram legends were tested on different types of statistical distributions. although the comparison of the results show that the FHL works best for a Gaussian or close to a gaussian distribution for eight or fewer classes, the customuzed application permits users to generate choropleth maps with frequency histogram legends for any type of statistical distribution with any number of classes. The analysis reveals that reader's background in statistic helped them to effectively utilize and interpret frequency histogram legends in the choropleth maps.
