[Termes IGN] symbole graphiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Emergency management in transnational contexts can be a challenging endeavour. Cultural and language differences among multiple countries can hinder the exchange of information during dynamic emergency response. With increasing international threats and the explosion of near real-time data availability, the emergency response process has become mired in complex communication practices. Maps have the potential to provide an intuitive medium for communication and means for establishing situation awareness during emergency events. The development of map symbol standards is one method for improving communication efficiency. This paper evaluates how the design of two national emergency management map symbol sets (American ANSI and Canadian EMS) influences map-readers’ conception of represented information. [Termes IGN] tsunamiRésumé : (Auteur) Coastal topography is the principal variable that affects the movement of the tsunami wave on land. Therefore, land surface elevation data are critical to a tsunami model for computing extent of inundation. Elevation data from India's remote sensing satellite CARTOSAT-1 are available for the entire Indian coastline, while elevation data collected using Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper (ALTM) are only available for selected sections of the coastline. This study was carried out to evaluate the suitability of CARTOSAT-1 and ALTM elevation data sets in the tsunami inundation modeling. Two areas of the coastal Tamil Nadu that were severely affected during the December 2004 tsunami and surveyed extensively for mapping the extent of inundation were selected as the study areas. Elevation data sets from ALTM, CARTOSAT-1 and field measurement collected using Real-time Kinematic GPS (RTK-GPS) were compared for these areas. The accuracy of ALTM and CARTOSAT-1 data, the significance of interpolation methods and data used on model outputs were studied. The analysis clearly revealed that the elevation accuracy of CARTOSAT-1 data (+/-2m) was much lower than ALTM data (+/-0.6m). However, it was found that despite the differing elevation accuracy, both ALTM and CARTOSAT-1 can be used to produce tsunami inundation maps for open coasts with an accuracy of 185 m (2 grid cells) at 75% and 50% confidence level, respectively. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) High resolution satellite imagery and airborne Lidar data can characterize the earth surface with unprecedented details in spatial and structure information, respectively. However, most studies have used them separately instead of in combination for land surface mapping. Considering their highly complementary nature, it is critical to investigate whether and how the integration of both can improve the accuracy of land cover and land use (LCLU) mapping. This study explored the use of Quickbird imagery and airborne Lidar data for mapping a complex urban environment in the City of Curitiba, Parana State, Southern Brazil, which is composed of secondary shrub vegetation, grass and climax primary Araucaria forests combined with urban objects such as roads and buildings. Airborne Lidar data were processed to generate DEM, DSM (Digital Surface Model), and DHM (Digital Height Model). The DSM generated from Lidar data were used to orthorectify Quickbird image with photogrammetric skills. A large number of metrics are generated from Lidar DHM, Lidar point cloud, Lidar intensity, and Quickbird imagery using object oriented segmentation approaches. Due to their power in handling non-parametric data, decision-tree based approaches were chosen to select the most relevant metrics and build rules for classification. It was found that the fusion of both types of data with decision trees increased the accuracy by 5 to 15% and resulted in an overall accuracy over 90%. Taking into account the increasing accessibility of Quickbird and airborne Lidar data, it is expected the methodology developed in this study has profound impacts in shifting our current paradigm in LCLU mapping.
