[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The main objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of deriving a land-cover map of the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, for the year 2000, using data from the 1 km SPOT-4 VEGETATION (VGT) sensor. For this purpose we used a VGT temporal series of 12 monthly composite images, which were further transformed to physical-meaningful fraction images of vegetation, soil, and shade. Classification of fraction images was implemented using several recent machine learning developments, namely, filtering input training data and probability bagging in a classification tree approach. A 10-fold cross validation accuracy assessment indicates that filtering and probability bagging are effective at increasing overall and class-specific accuracy. Overall accuracy and mean probability of class membership were 0.88 and 0.80, respectively. The map of probability of class membership indicates that the larger errors are associated with cerrado savonna and semi-deciduous forest. [Termes IGN] précision de la classificationRésumé : (Auteur) For some tropical regions, remote sensing of land cover yields unacceptable results, particularly as the number of land cover classes increases. This research explores the utility of incorporating domain knowledge and multiple algorithms into land cover classifications via a rule-based algorithm for a series of satellite images. The proposed technique integrates the fundamental, knowledge-based interpretation elements of remote sensing without sacrificing the ease and consistency of automated, algorithm-based processing. Compared with results from a traditional maximum likelihood algorithm, classification accuracy was improved substantially for each of the six land cover classes and all three years in the image series. Use of domain knowledge proved effective in accurately classifying problematic tropical land covers, such as tropical deciduous forest and seasonal wetlands. Results also suggest that ancillary data may be most useful in the classification of historic images, where the greatest improvement was observed relative to results from maximum likelihood. The cost of incorporating contextual knowledge and extensive spatial data sets may be justified, since results from the proposed technique suggest a considerable improvement in accuracy may be achieved. [Termes IGN] Polynésie françaiseRésumé : (Auteur) French Polynesia islands are located at the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. They are thus subject to a strong environmental planning leading to landscape changes as well as to the introduction of invasive species. This study comes within the framework of the global cartography and inventory of the Polynesian landscape. An AIRSAR airborne mission took place in August 2000 over the main Polynesian islands. Polarimetric SAR data are particularly adapted to the cloudy conditions generally encountered over the South Pacific Islands. Fully polarimetric data allows the analysis of a geometrical and physical point of view. Different decompositions, such as H/A/a or based on the Pauli formalism have shown their potential for such applications. In order to apply these indicators and to produce a semi-automatic cartography of the Tubuai Island, we choose to use the SVM (Support Vector Machine) as supervised classifier. These results are also compared with the Wishart classifier based on the analysis of the polarimetric coherency matrix only. As our full polarimetric data are also available in P and L bands, this study evaluates the contribution of the different wavelength. This study shown that the combination of SVM and full polarimetric data, associates with different wavelength, gives promising results. By combining Self-Organizing Map (SOM), Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ), and Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) methods, the posterior probability of the various land cover components were estimated for each pixel as a means of sub-pixel analysis. The estimation of impervious surface and the differentiation of urban vegetation grass versus woody tree coverage the main objectives of this paper. Overall, the output estimates compared favorably with those obtained using higher spatial resolution aerial photograph and IKONOS satellite image and traditional hard classification techniques as independent reference. The SOM-LVQ-GMM mode! showed a moderate degree of similarity in the estimates of impervious surface [root mean-square errors (RMSEs) of Numéro de notice : A2006-261 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1109/TGRS.2006.869984 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1109/TGRS.2006.869984 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27988
