[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) This paper describes a methodology to produce a 7-classes land cover map of urban areas from very high resolution images and limited noisy labeled data. The objective is to make a segmentation map of a large area (a french department) with the following classes: asphalt, bare soil, building, grassland, mineral material (permeable artificialized areas), forest and water from 20cm aerial images and Digital Height Model. We created a training dataset on a few areas of interest aggregating databases, semi-automatic classification, and manual annotation to get a complete ground truth in each class. A comparative study of different encoder-decoder architectures (U-Net, U-Net with Resnet encoders, Deeplab v3+) is presented with different loss functions. The final product is a highly valuable land cover map computed from model predictions stitched together, binarized, and refined before vectorization. [Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (auteur) OpenStreetMap (OSM) provides free source data for land use and land cover (LULC) mapping of many regions globally. Earlier work has used just manual and subjective approaches to establish correspondence between paired OSM and reference datasets, an essential step for LULC mapping. This study proposes an approach to establish correspondence via three steps: (1) convert line feature(s) into polygon feature(s); (2) merge multiple polygon feature(s) into a single layer; and (3) establish correspondence and reclassify OSM and/or reference datasets. Study areas in Sheffield, London, Rome, and Paris were used for testing, and two measures (overall accuracy, OA and kappa index) were used for evaluation. Experiments were designed to verify this approach, with each pair of OSM and reference datasets initially compared after reclassification. Correspondence from one study area was then applied to another for further validation. Results show that OA was between 70 and 90% and the kappa index varied between 0.6 and 0.8. Evaluation also indicates that the correspondence obtained from one study area is applicable to another, and we illustrate the effectiveness of this approach. [Termes IGN] terre arableRésumé : (Auteur) The necessity of mapping changes in land cover categories based on satellite imageries is a challenging task especially in terms of arable land and grasslands. The phenological phases of arable lands change quickly while grasslands is more stable. It might be hard to capture these changes regarding the spectral overlap between crops in full growth and grass itself. We have introduced a relatively simple processing workflow with good efficiency and accuracy. Our proposed method utilises the combination of a Multivariate Alteration Change Detection Algorithm and an existing boosting method, such as the AdaBoost algorithm with different weak learners and the most recent one – Extreme Gradient Boosting that is actually a relatively new approach in remote sensing. According to the results, the highest overall accuracy is 89.51 %. The proposed process workflow was tested on Landsat data with 30 m spatial resolution, using open-source software: R and GRASS GIS, Orfeo Toolbox library. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (Auteur) Earth Observation (EO) provides a unique means of obtaining information on land use/cover and of its changes, which is of key importance in many scientific and practical applications. EO data is already widely used, for example, in environmental practices or decision-making related to food availability and security. As such, it is imperative to examine the suitability of different EO datasets, including their synergies, in respect to their ability to create products and tools for such practices and to guide effectively such decisions. This work aims at exploring the added value of the synergistic use of optical and radar data (from the Landsat TM and Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) sensors respectively). Such information can help towards improving the accuracy of land cover classifications from EO datasets. As a case study, the region of Wales in the UK has been used. Two classifications—one based on optical data alone and another one developed from the synergy of optical and RADAR datasets acquired nearly, concurrently were developed for the studied region. Evaluation of the derived land/use cover maps was performed on the basis of the confusion matrix using validation points derived from a Phase 1 habitat map of Wales. The results showed 15% increase in overall accuracy (84% from 69%) and kappa coefficient (0.81 from 0.65) using the synergistic approach over the scenario where only optical data were used in the classification. In addition, McNemar’s test was used to assess the statistical significance of the obtained results. Results of this test provided further confirmed that the use of optical data synergistically with the radar data provides more accurate land use/cover maps in comparison with the use of optical data alone. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (Auteur) The Inner Mongolian steppe is a vast grassland ecosystem that has long been home to nomadic pastoralists. However, this steppe is experiencing grassland degradation as well as more frequent sand storms. The objective of this study was to detect land-cover changes in the Wulagai grassland of Inner Mongolia using multi-temporal Landsat images from 1986 to 2014, and to determine the factors driving these changes and their impacts. Land-cover maps for 1986, 1995, 2000, 2006 and 2014 were produced using the Support Vector Machine method. Subsequently, 300 m × 300 m grid-cell vector map which covered Wulagai grassland was made to detect land-cover changes and correlations between land-cover classes. The results show degradation trend from 1986 to 2014. Grid-cell-based spatial correlation analysis confirmed a strong negative correlation between grassland and barren, indicating that grassland degradation in this region is due to the regional modernization over the past 28 years.
