[Termes IGN] SahelRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a method to monitor the dynamics of herbaceous vegetation in the Sahel. The approach is based on the assimilation of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data acquired by the VEGETATION instrument on board SPOT 4/5 into a simple sahelian vegetation dynamics model. The study region is located in the Gourma region of Mali. The vegetation dynamics model is coupled with a radiative transfer model (the SAIL model). First, it is checked that the coupled models allow for a realistic simulation of the seasonal and interannual variability of NDVI over three sampling sites from 1999 to 2004. The data assimilation scheme relies on a parameter identification technique based on an Evolution Strategies algorithm. The simulated above-ground herbage mass resulting from NDVI assimilation is then compared to ground measurements performed over 13 study sites during the period 1999–2004. The assimilation scheme performs well with 404 kg DM/ha of average error (n = 126 points) and a correlation coefficient of r = 0.80 (to be compared to the 463 kg DM/ha and r = 0.60 of the model performance without data assimilation). Finally, the sensitivity of the herbage mass model estimates to the quality of the meteorological forcing (rainfall and net radiation) is analyzed thanks to a stochastic approach. [Termes IGN] Yunnan (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) Mapping dominant vegetation communities is important work for vegetation scientists. It is very difficult to map dominant vegetation communities using multispectral remote sensing data only, especially in mountain areas. However plant community data contain useful information about the relationships between plant communities and their environment. In this paper, plant community data are linked with remote sensing to map vegetation communities. The Bayesian soft classifier was used to produce posterior probability images for each class. These images were used to calculate the prior probabilities. One hundred and eighty plant plots at Meili Snow Mountain, Yunnan Province, China were used to characterize the vegetation distribution for each class along altitude gradients. Then, the frequencies were used to modify the prior probabilities of each class. After stratification in a vegetation part and a non-vegetation part, a maximum-likelihood classification with equal prior probabilities was conducted, yielding an overall accuracy of 82.1% and a kappa accuracy of 0.797. Maximum-likelihood classification with modified prior probabilities in the vegetation part, conducted with a conventional maximum-likelihood classification for the non-vegetation part, yielded an overall accuracy of 87.7%, and a kappa accuracy of 0.861. [Termes IGN] traitement du signalRésumé : (Auteur) The objectives of this study were to identify useful predictive factors for tree species identification of individual trees and to compare classifications based on a combination of LiDAR data and multi-spectral images with classification by the use of each individual data source. Crown segments derived from LiDAR data were mapped to multi-spectral images for extraction of spectral data within individual tree crowns. Several features, related to height distribution of laser returns in the canopy, canopy shape, proportion of different types of laser returns, and intensity of laser returns, were derived from LiDAR data. Data from a test site in southern Sweden were used (lat. 58°30' N, long. 13°40' E). The forest consisted of Norway spruce (Picea abies), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), and deciduous trees. Classification into these three tree species groups was validated for 1711 trees that had been detected in LiDAR data within 14 field plots (sizes of 20x50 m or 80x80 m). The LiDAR data were acquired by the TopEye MkII system (50 LiDAR measurements per m) and the multi-spectral images were taken by the Zeiss/Intergraph Digital Mapping Camera. The overall classification accuracy was 96% when both data sources were combined.
