[Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Permanent Grasslands (PG) are heterogeneous environments with high spatial and temporal dynamics, subject to increasing environmental challenges. This study aims to identify requirements, key constraining factors and solutions for robust and complete detection of Mowing Events. Remote sensing is a powerful tool to monitor and investigate Near-Real-Time and seasonally PG cover. Here, pros and cons of Sentinel-2 (S2) and Sentinel-1 (S1) time series exploitation for Mowing Events (MowEve) detection are analysed. A deep-based approach is proposed to obtain consistent and homogeneous biophysical parameter times series for MowEve detection. Recurrent Neural Networks are proposed as regression strategy allowing the synergistic integration of optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar data to reconstruct dense NDVI times series. Experimental results corroborates the interest of deriving consistent and homogeneous series of biophysical parameters for subsequent MowEve detection. However, knowledge of the spatio-temporal dynamics associated with winter land-use remains a challenge for the scientific community. In this context, the objective of this study is to evaluate the potential of time series of high spatial resolution optical and SAR images for the study of winter land-use at a local and regional scale. For that purpose, a methodology has been established to: (i) determine the most suitable classification method for identifying winter land-use ; (ii) compare Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 optical images; (iii) define the most suitable SAR configuration by comparing three image time-series (Alos-2, Radarsat-2 and Sentinel-1).The results first of all highlighted the interest of the Random Forest classification algorithm to discriminate at a fine scale the different types of land use in winter. Secondly, they showed the value of Sentinel-2 data for mapping winter land-use at a local and regional scale. Finally, they determined that a dense time series of Sentinel-1 images was the most appropriate SAR configuration to identify winter land-use. In general, while this thesis has shown that Sentinel-2 data are best suited to studying land use in winter, SAR images are of great interest in regions with significant cloud cover, dense Sentinel-1 time-series having being defined as the most efficient. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Oil exploration and contamination monitoring remain limited in regions covered by vegetation. Natural seepages and oil leakages due to facility failures are often masked by the foliage, making ineffective the current technologies used for detecting crude oil and petroleum products. However, the exposure of vegetation to oil affects its health and, consequently, its optical properties in the [400:2500] nm domain. This suggest being able to detect seepages and leakages indirectly, by analyzing vegetation health through its spectral reflectance. Based on this assumption, this thesis evaluates the potential of airborne hyperspectral imagery with high spatial resolution for detecting and quantifying oil contamination in vegetated regions. To achieve this, a three-step multiscale approach was adopted. The first step aimed at developing a method for detecting and characterizing the contamination under controlled conditions, by exploiting the optical properties of Rubus fruticosus L. The proposed method combines 14 vegetation indices in classification and allows detecting various oil contaminants accurately, from leaf to canopy scale. Its use under natural conditions was validated on a contaminated mud pit colonized by the same species. During the second step, a method for quantifying total petroleum hydrocarbons, based on inverting the PROSPECT model, was developed. The method exploits the pigment content of leaves, estimated from their spectral signature, for predicting the level of hydrocarbon contamination in soils accurately. The last step of the approach demonstrated the robustness of the two methods using airborne imagery. They proved performing for detecting and quantifying mud pit contamination. Another method of quantification, based on multiple regression, was proposed. At the end of this thesis, the three methods proposed were validated for use both on the field, at leaf and canopy scales, and on airborne hyperspectral images with high spatial resolution. Their performances depend however on the species, the season and the level of soil contamination. A similar approach was conducted under tropical conditions, allowing the development of a method for quantifying the contamination adapted to this context. In a perspective of operational use, an important effort is still required for extending the scope of the methods to other contexts and for anticipating their use on satellite- and drone-embedded hyperspectral sensors. Finally, the contribution of active remote sensing (radar and LiDAR) should be considered in further research, in order to overcome some of the limits specific to passive optical remote sensing. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Individual tree detection and crown delineation (ITDD) are critical in forest inventory management and remote sensing based forest surveys are largely carried out through satellite images. However, most of these surveys only use 2D spectral information which normally has not enough clues for ITDD. To fully explore the satellite images, we propose a ITDD method using the orthophoto and digital surface model (DSM) derived from the multi-view satellite data. Our algorithm utilizes the top-hat morphological operation to efficiently extract the local maxima from DSM as treetops, and then feed them to a modified superpixel segmentation that combines both 2D and 3D information for tree crown delineation. In subsequent steps, our method incorporates the biological characteristics of the crowns through plant allometric equation to falsify potential outliers. Experiments against manually marked tree plots on three representative regions have demonstrated promising results – the best overall detection accuracy can be 89%. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Optimizing water management in agriculture is essential over semi-arid areas in order to preserve water resources which are already low and erratic due to human actions and climate change. This thesis aims to use the synergy of multispectral remote sensing observations (radar, optical and thermal data) for high spatio-temporal resolution monitoring of crops water needs. In this context, different approaches using various sensors (Landsat-7/8, Sentinel-1 and MODIS) have been developed to provide information on the crop Soil Moisture (SM) and water stress at a spatio-temporal scale relevant to irrigation management. This work fits well the REC "Root zone soil moisture Estimates at the daily and agricultural parcel scales for Crop irrigation management and water use impact: a multi-sensor remote sensing approach" (http://rec.isardsat.com/) project objectives, which aim to estimate the Root Zone Soil Moisture (RZSM) for optimizing the management of irrigation water. Innovative and promising approaches are set up to estimate evapotranspiration (ET), RZSM, land surface temperature (LST) and vegetation water stress through SM indices derived from multispectral observations with high spatio-temporal resolution. The proposed methodologies rely on image-based methods, radiative transfer modelling and water and energy balance modelling and are applied in a semi-arid climate region (central Morocco). In the frame of my PhD thesis, three axes have been investigated. In the first axis, a Landsat LST-derived RZSM index is used to estimate the ET over wheat parcels and bare soil. The ET modelling estimation is explored using a modified Penman-Monteith equation obtained by introducing a simple empirical relationship between surface resistance (rc) and a RZSM index. The later is estimated from Landsat-derived land surface temperature (LST) combined with the LST endmembers (in wet and dry conditions) simulated by a surface energy balance model driven by meteorological forcing and Landsat-derived fractional vegetation cover. The investigated method is calibrated and validated over two wheat parcels located in the same area near Marrakech City in Morocco. In the next axis, a method to retrieve near surface (0-5 cm) SM at high spatial and temporal resolution is developed from a synergy between radar (Sentinel-1) and thermal (Landsat) data and by using a soil energy balance model. The developed approach is validated over bare soil agricultural fields and gives an accurate estimates of near surface SM with a root mean square difference compared to in situ SM equal to 0.03 m3 m-3. In the final axis a new method is developed to disaggregate the 1 km resolution MODIS LST at 100 m resolution by integrating the near surface SM derived from Sentinel-1 radar data and the optical-vegetation index derived from Landsat observations. The new algorithm including the S-1 backscatter as input to the disaggregation, produces more stable and robust results during the selected year. Where, 3.35 °C and 0.75 were the lowest RMSE and the highest correlation coefficient assessed using the new algorithm. Note de contenu : General Introduction
