[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) This study estimated leaf area index (LAI) of individual urban trees as a function of spectral features derived from airborne hyperspectral data. Candidate features included spectral indexes, principal components, and calibrated reflectance values. Hyperspectral images were acquired over Provo, Utah area, and LAI of 204 deciduous trees was measured in the field. These tree canopies were identified on the images, and spectral features were extracted using both whole canopy and mean-lit spectra techniques. Multiple regression and artificial neural networks were used to model leaf area and determine which spectral features were most strongly related to it. Results established that simple hyperspectral vegetation indexes explained more variation in urban tree LAI than either principal component scores or simple band reflectance values. The neural network model trained with a subset of those indexes explained more variation in LAI (R2 = 64.8 percent) than any of the multiple regression models tested. [Termes IGN] réflectance végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) A new multi-wavelength canopy LiDAR (MWCL) system intended for the remote sensing of vegetation reflection was designed and its measurement performance was investigated. The system operates with four lasers of different wavelengths chosen according to nitrogen stresses that induce changes in the optical properties and spectral reflectance of rice leaves. The optical design and instrumentation are described in this paper as well as a discussion on system calibration. The MWCL system was demonstrated to possess a high capability of recording the physiology of the canopy, which is not possible when solely employing a traditional single-wavelength LiDAR. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) This study investigated the robustness of hyperspectral image-based plant recognition to seasonal variability in a natural farming environment in the context of automated in-row weed control. A machine vision system was developed and equipped with a CCD camera integrated with a line-imaging spectrograph for close-range weed sensing and mapping. Three canonical Bayesian classifiers were developed using canopy reflectance (400–795 nm) collected over three seasons for tomato and weeds. The performance of the three season-specific classifiers was tested by changing environmental conditions, resulting in an increase in total error rate of up to 36%. Global calibration across the complete span of the three seasons produced overall classification accuracies of 85.0%, 90.0% and 92.7%, respectively, for 2005, 2006 and 2008. To improve the stability of global classifier over multiple seasons, a multiclassifier system was constructed with three canonical Bayesian classifiers optimized for the three seasons individually. This system was tested on a data set simulating an upcoming season with field conditions similar to that in 2005. The system increased the total discrimination accuracy to 95.8% for the tested season under simulation. This method provided an innovative direction for achieving robust plant recognition over multiple seasons by integrating expert knowledge from historical data that most closely matched the new field environment. [Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) In most forestry remote sensing applications in steep terrain, simple photometric and empirical (PE) topographic corrections are confounded as a result of stand structure and species assemblages that vary with terrain and the anisotropic reflective properties of vegetated surfaces. To address these problems, we present MFM-TOPO as a new physically-based modelling (PBM) approach for normalising topographically induced signal variance as a function of forest stand structure and sub-pixel scale components. MFM-TOPO uses the Li-Strahler geometric optical mutual shadowing (GOMS) canopy reflectance model in Multiple Forward Mode (MFM) to account for slope and aspect influences directly. MFM-TOPO has an explicit physical-basis and uses sun-canopy-sensor (SCS) geometry that is more appropriate than strictly terrain-based corrections in forested areas since it preserves the geotropic nature of trees (vertical growth with respect to the geoid) regardless of terrain, view and illumination angles. MFM-TOPO is compared against our recently developed SCS+C correction and a comprehensive set of other existing PE and SCS methods (cosine, C correction, Minnaert, statistical-empirical, SCS, and b correction) for removing topographically induced variance and for improving SPOT image classification accuracy in a Rocky Mountain forest in Kananaskis, Alberta Canada. MFM-TOPO removed the most terrain-based variance and provided the greatest improvement in classification accuracy within a species and stand density based class structure. For example, pine class accuracy was increased by 62% over shaded slopes, and spruce class accuracy was increased by 13% over more moderate slopes. In addition to classification, MFM-TOPO is suitable for retrieving biophysical parameters in mountainous terrain.
