[Termes IGN] traitement interactifRésumé : (Auteur) Events are a core concept of spatial information, but location-based social media (LBSM) provide information on reactions to events. Individuals have varied degrees of agency in initiating, reacting to or modifying the course of events, and reactions include observations of occurrence, expressions containing sentiment or emotions, or a call to action. Key characteristics of reactions include referent events and information about who reacted, when, where and how. Collective reactions are composed of multiple individual reactions sharing common referents. They can be characterized according to the following dimensions: spatial, temporal, social, thematic and interlinkage. We present a conceptual framework, which allows characterization and comparison of collective reactions. For a thematically well-defined class of event such as storms, we can explore differences and similarities in collective attribution of meaning across space and time. Other events may have very complex spatio-temporal signatures (e.g. political processes such as Brexit or elections), which can be decomposed into series of individual events (e.g. a temporal window around the result of a vote). The purpose of our framework is to explore ways in which collective reactions to events in LBSM can be described and underpin the development of methods for analysing and understanding collective reactions to events. [Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (Auteur) Interpersonal communication on online social networks has a significant impact on the society by not only diffusing information, but also forming social ties, norms, and behaviors. Knowing how the conversational discourse semantically and geographically vary over time can help uncover the changing dynamics of interpersonal ties and the digital traces of social events. This article introduces a framework for modeling and visualizing the semantic and spatio-temporal evolution of topics in a spatially embedded and time-stamped interpersonal communication network. The framework consists of (1) a topic modeling workflow for modeling topics and extracting the evolution of conversational discourse; (2) a geo-social network modeling and smoothing approach to projecting connection characteristics and semantics of communication onto geographic space and time; (3) a web-based geovisual analytics environment for exploring semantic and spatio-temporal evolution of topics in a spatially embedded and time-stamped interpersonal communication network. To demonstrate, geo-located and reciprocal user mention and reply tweets over the course of the 2016 primary and presidential elections in the United States from 1 August 2015 to 15 November 2016 were analyzed. The large portion of the topics extracted from mention tweets were related to daily life routines, human activities, and interests such as school, work, sports, dating, wearing, birthday celebration, music, food, and live-tweeting. Specific focus on the analysis of political conversations revealed that the content of conversational discourse was split between civil rights and election-related discussions of the political campaigns and candidates. These political topics exhibited major shifts in terms of content and the popularity in reaction to primaries, debates, and events throughout the study period. While civil rights discussions were more dominant and in higher intensity across the nation and throughout the whole time period, election-specific conversations resulted in temporally varying local hotspots that correlated with locations of primaries and events. Over the last decade, the number of mobile systems and devices recording their positions has grown significantly generating a deluge of spatial and temporal data to analyze. This increasing volume of data raises numerous issues in terms of storage, processing and extraction of information. Previous works considering movement analysis have been mainly oriented towards either archived data processing and mining or continuous handling of incoming streams. The research developed in this paper introduces the design principles of a holistic approach combining real-time processing and archived data analysis to process mobility data “on the fly”. This solution aims to provide better results comparing to both purely offline and online approaches. This research considers distributed data and processing to be more efficient. The design principles are applied to maritime traffic analysis and a few representative examples are introduced to demonstrate the relevance of our approach. In this article, we demonstrate that despite having travelled a route recently and having much experience of the area in question, an individual may lack such a degree of knowledge. Previous research and experience informs us that a map is an effective tool for bridging gaps in one’s spatial knowledge. In this article, we propose an approach, known as an Interactive Route Description, for defining and interpreting route descriptions interactively with a map. This approach is based on the concept of annotating the map in question and allows the aforementioned gap in one’s spatial knowledge to be bridged. An additional benefit of defining route descriptions in this way is that it facilitates automatic parsing and in turn offers many potential applications. One such application, illustrated in this paper, is the automatic transformation to other representations of the description such as turn-by-turn instructions. [Termes IGN] traitement interactifRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate provenance information facilitates improved understanding of Earth science data and scientific reproducibility and can serve as an indicator of data quality. Provenance capture is an integral part of many modern workflow systems but may not have been considered in the design of legacy data production systems. Furthermore, in addition to data lineage, it is also important to capture contextual information needed for understanding how a data set was produced. This paper describes our experience in retrofitting a legacy data system to support capture, storage, and dissemination of provenance. Data inputs and transformations are logged automatically, while broader context information describing science algorithms and ancillary files is manually compiled. Provenance and context information are integrated for interactive user access and embedded into data files as XML documents compliant with the “Lineage” specification for geographic metadata defined by the International Organization for Standardization in the ISO 19115-2 standard. Lessons learned from this approach can inform others who need to incorporate provenance into a data system after the fact.
