[Termes IGN] représentation du reliefRésumé : (Auteur) Isolines have proved to be a highly effective way of conveying the shape of a surface (most commonly in the form of height contours to convey geographical landscape). Selecting the right contour interval is a compromise between showing sufficient detail in flat regions, whilst avoiding excessive crowding of lines in steep and morphologically complex areas. The traditional way of avoiding coalescence and confusion across steep regions has been to manually remove short sections of intermediate contours, while retaining index contours. Incorporating humans in automated environments is not viable. This research reports on the design, implementation and evaluation of an automated solution to this problem involving the automatic identification of coalescing lines, and removal of line segments to ensure clarity in the interpretation of contour information. Evaluation was made by subjective comparison with Ordnance Survey products. The results were found to be very close to the quality associated with manual techniques. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a method for suppressing distance conflicts between isobathymetric lines modeled with B-spline curves for cartographic generalization. The initial B-spline curves are obtained by compressing a set of polygonal lines representing the raw data. The conflict removal is realized by respecting strong cartographic constraints, such as the navigation safety and the legibility of the map, and weak constraints, such as the preservation of the submarine relief. A polygonal line representing the minimal displacement that corrects a conflict is first computed. Then, the curve is deformed using a snake model. The constraints are expressed via different energy terms, and the curve is deformed until a valid solution is reached. In order to apply the method without user intervention, the shape parameters of the snake are set automatically. The advantage of the method is that it ensures the respect of strong constraints in every case while taking into account the weaker ones. The method can also be applied to the correction of visual self-intersections. The use of a snake model combined with B-spline curves permits a better control of the deformation than polygonal lines better preserving of the shape of the curves. Examples of real case studies issued from bathymetric databases are provided, and the benefits and drawbacks of the method are discussed. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) A new method (the 'sink' method) is proposed for the mapping of productive mesoscale oceanic thermal fronts based on the combined analysis of satellite imagery for sea surface temperature (SST) distribution and chlorophyll (CHL) concentration under a Geographic Information System (GIS). In an SST lattice data array, data value sinks describe heterogeneous drops in SST distribution as this is compared to more homogeneously distributed SST in the surrounding area. Using Arc/Info GIS, these thermal discontinuities are flagged and applied on SST and CHL imagery for the calculation of differences in SST and CHL patterns (DSST and DCHL) inside and outside of these flagged areas. Spatially connected sinks that are characterized by simultaneous negative DSST and positive DCHL pattern are mapped as thermal fronts. Results include a time series of monthly front occurrence GIS maps in Eastern Mediterranean waters along with three calculated front characteristics (DSST, DCHL and bathymetry). Comparisons between the mapped fronts and isobath distributions present clearly visible front-to-isobath spatial and shape associations while spatial analysis between front and wind data explains 66% of the number of mapped fronts. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) We present two new pre-processing techniques that improve thin plate Digital Elevation Model (DEM) approximations from grid-based contour data. One method computes gradients from an initial interpolated or approximated surface. The aspects are used to create gradient paths that are interpolated using Catmull-Rom splines. The computed elevations are added to the initial contour data set. Thin plate methods are applied to all of the data. The splines allow information to flow across contours, improving the final surface. The second method successively computes new, intermediate contours in between existing isolines, which provide additional data for subsequent thin plate processing. Both methods alleviate artifacts visible in previous thin plate methods. The surfaces are tested with published methods to show qualitative and quantitative improvements over previous methods.
