[Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Global warming has obtained more and more attention because the global mean surface temperature has increased since the late 19th century. As more than 50% of the human population lives in cities, urbanization has become an important contributor for global warming. Pearl River Delta (PRD) in Guangdong Province, southern China, is one of the regions experiencing rapid urbanization that has resulted in remarkable Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, which will be sure to influence the regional climate, environment, and socio-economic development. In this study, Landsat TM and ETM+ images from 1990 to 2000 in the PRD were selected to retrieve the brightness temperatures and land use/cover types. A new index, Normalized Difference Bareness Index (NDBaI), was proposed to extract bare land from the satellite images. Additionally, Shenzhen, which has experienced the fastest urbanization in Guangdong Province, was taken as an example to analyze the temperature distribution and changes within a large city as its size expanded in the past decade. Results show that the UHI effect has become more prominent in areas of rapid urbanization in the PRD region. The spatial distribution of heat islands has been changed from a mixed pattern, where bare land, semi-bare land and land under development were warmer than other surface types, to extensive UHI. Our analysis showed that higher temperature in the UHI was located with a scattered pattern, which was related to certain land-cover types. In order to analyze the relationship between UHI and land-cover changes, this study attempted to employ a quantitative approach in exploring the relationship between temperature and several indices, including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Normalized Difference Bareness Index (NDBaI) and Normalized Difference Build-up Index (NDBI). It was found that correlations between NDVI, NDWI, NDBaI and temperature are negative when NDVI is limited in range, but positive correlation is shown between NDBI and temperature. [Termes IGN] SomalieRésumé : (Editeur) Many countries in Africa are on the way towards having a formal, national strategy on Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). Somalia, however, after fifteen years of civil strife, is lagging behind. The SWALIM projects collects information to improve water and food security. The authors describe how the project, despite its lack of legal or institutional authority or specific SDI focus, already has in place many components of an SDI. [Termes IGN] sol acideRésumé : (auteur) Base cation cycling was investigated on the Canadian Shield in a pristine catchment of the boreal forest. An input–output budget (atmospheric deposition – stream exports) for the whole watershed indicated that nitrogen (N) was strongly retained, while sulphur (S) and base cations (K, Ca, Mg) were lost. The S losses are attributed to internal sources, such as SO4 desorption and/or mineralisation of soil organic-S. The base cation losses at the catchment scale, however, might be contributed by weathering of the till below the rooting zone, which has little ecological significance. For this reason, a detailed budget of basic cations, including atmospheric deposition, tree uptake, mineral weathering and leaching losses was constructed for the soil rooting zone of a stand representative of the forest covering the catchment. Different scenarios of tree uptake (whole tree and stem-only harvesting), weathering rates (PROFILE modelled values, PROFILE modelled values corrected for soil Na leaching) and soil leaching losses (depth of 22 and 81 cm) were considered. The element budgets were summed for the 1997–2003 (7 years) period. In every scenario, K was lost (−35.5 to −1.2 kg ha−1) from the exchangeable reservoir. Gain or losses of Ca were observable, depending of the scenario considered (28.8 to −20.1 kg ha−1) while Mg (−0.8 to 13.3 kg ha−1) generally accumulated over the 7-year period. The absolute K losses are very important, given the very small K soil exchangeable reservoir (55.2 kg ha−1) at the site. Because the amount of K sequestered in biomass (110 kg ha−1) is twice the amount found in the exchangeable soil reservoir, this forest is very sensitive to commercial forestry operations and forest harvesting appears as the main pathway of base cation losses. This raises important questions regarding the sustainability of the boreal forest that lies on K-poor soils of the Canadian Shield. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of the study was to examine how robust soil-terrain models are to uncertainty in the source elevation data. The study site was a 74ha agricultural field in Australia. A global positioning system was used to measure elevation and the uncertainty of the measurement, therefore allowing maps of elevation and its uncertainty to be created. Monte-Carlo simulation with a modified version of Latin Hypercube Sampling was used to create 100 realizations of a slope map. Clay content was measured at 111 sites, and kriging with external drift was used to map clay content where each slope realization was used as a secondary information source. Maps of the mean and standard deviation of clay content across all realizations were created. The standard deviations of clay content were generally small «4dagkg-1) and in most parts of the field less than the analytical accuracy of the hydrometer method which was used to measure soil clay content in the laboratory. The values in the map of elevation uncertainty were multiplied by 5 and the entire error propagation process was repeated to create a second set of 100 realizations of the clay content. The ratio of the uncertainty in the original DEM was 5:1 when compared with that in the perturbed DEM, i.e. it was multiplied by 5. The ratio between the standard deviation in the two clay-content maps was 3.79: 1, which indicates a reduction in uncertainty through the modelling process. The results showed that the soil-terrain model performs well for the study area, and it is not very sensitive to DEM errors. We conclude that input uncertainty tests as shown in this study should accompany soil mapping studies where secondary information is used in the prediction model.
