[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Significant seasonal fluctuations could occur in the regional scattering characteristics and surface deformation of saline soil, and cause decorrelation, which limits the application of the conventional time-series InSAR (TS-InSAR). For extending the saline-soil deformation monitoring capability, this paper presents an improved TS-InSAR approach, based on the interferometric coherence statistics and high-coherence interferogram refinement. By constructing a network of the refined interferograms, high-accuracy ground deformation can be extracted through the weighted least square estimation and the coherent target refinement. To extract the high-accuracy deformation of a representative saline soil area in the Qarhan Salt Lake, 119 C-band Sentinel-1A images collected between May 2015 and May 2020 are selected as the data source. Subsequently, 845 refined interferograms are selected from all possible interferograms to conduct the network inversion, based on the related thresholds (the temporal baseline 0.5, respectively). Compared with the conventional TS-InSAR measurements, both the accuracy and reliability of the extracted deformation results of the saline soil increased dramatically. Furthermore, the testing results indicate that the improved TS-InSAR method has advantages on the deformation extraction in the saline soil region, and is adaptive to reflecting the typical seasonal variations of the saline soil. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Background: Biomass ratio (BR) is a forest state variable allowing the conversion of forest volume of growing stock into biomass. Despite huge intraspecific variation in wood density depending on the biotic and abiotic environments of tree growth, this variable is most often considered a tree species constant in C budgets. The aims were i) to identify variations in BR along decorrelated water, soil nutrition and elevation gradients, ii) to test for differences between broadleaved and conifer tree species in BR variations, and iii) to weight the contribution of interspecific and intraspecific diversity in BR variations.
Methods: Analyses were based on massive wood density measurements performed with an X-ray medical scanner on 54,700 tree cores collected in 2016 and 2017 on the spatially systematic plot sampling design of the French national forest inventory (NFI) program.
Results: BR variations along the three gradients were found significant. BR hence decreased by 73 kg.m-3 (conifers) and 126 kg.m-3 (broadleaves) along a 180 mm gradient of soil water holding capacity (SWHC). It also increased by 153 kg.m-3 on average along the full gradient of soil basicity Index (SBI). A negative trend along elevation was also identified, with an average decrease by 155 kg.m-3 from 200 to 2000 m of elevation. Species distribution was found to be the main cause of BR variations along these gradients.
Conclusions: We report dependences of BR on both water (–), nutrient availability (+) and warmth (+) gradients, more acute in broadleaves than in conifers only for water availability. At the scale of the whole French forests, intraspecific variations in wood density do not affect BR estimations along these gradients. BR variations are mainly driven by the tree stand species composition along them.Numéro de notice : A2021-082 Affiliation des auteurs : LIF+Ext (2020- ) Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s11258-020-01106-0 Date de publication en ligne : 03/01/2021 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s11258-020-01106-0 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=96826

[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Mechanical site preparation (MSP) is widely used in forestry to improve plantation success. Although it is known to alter soil properties, its direct effects on soil structure have rarely been described. The cultivation profile is a visual soil evaluation (VSE) method developed in agricultural research to analyse the impacts of cultivation practices on soil structure. The objective of the study was to adapt the method to forest plantations in order to analyse the effects of MSP on soil quality. Cultivation profiles were performed in six experimental plantation sites located in Northern France. The method made it possible to compare the impacts on soil structure of three MSP methods. It provided a schematic representation of the soil structural quality and a quantitative estimation of the volume of soil favourable to seedling root growth. It also highlighted unexpected negative effects of some MSP methods on soil structure, such as the creation of small cavities, the presence of compacted soil volumes due to wheel tracks or smeared soil volumes due to tool pass, and the pseudogleisation of soil zones due to changes in water circulation in the soil. The relevance and limitations of VSE methods in the context of forest plantation as well as the expected future development of the methods are discussed.
