[Termes IGN] surveillance hydrologiqueRésumé : (éditeur) This open access book addresses the various disciplinary aspects of nature-based solutions in flood risk management on private land. In recent decades, water management has been moving towards nature-based solutions. These are assumed to be much more multi-purpose than traditional “grey infrastructures” and seem to be regarded as a panacea for many environmental issues. At the same time, such measures require more – and mostly privately owned – land and more diverse stakeholder involvement than traditional (grey) engineering approaches. They also present challenges related to different disciplines. Nature-based solutions for flood risk management not only require technical expertise, but also call for interdisciplinary insights from land-use planning, economics, property rights, sociology, landscape planning, ecology, hydrology, agriculture and other disciplines to address the challenges of implementing them. Ultimately, nature-based flood risk management is a multi-disciplinary endeavor. Featuring numerous case studies of nature-based flood risk management accompanied by commentaries, this book presents brief academic reflections from two different disciplinary perspectives that critically highlight which specific aspects are of significance, and as such, underscore the multi-disciplinary nature of the challenges faced. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Understanding the response of plant species to soil factors on coastal sand dunes is critical for effective conservation of coastal habitats in the Mediterranean basin. Our main objectives were to investigate: i) the main soil factors driving species composition in a Mediterranean coastal dune environment; ii) the ecological requirements of focal plant species with respect to single soil factors; iii) whether the focal species of a given macrohabitat (including EU habitats) have similar edaphic needs. We identified 108 plots with three macrohabitats as strata (embryo dunes; mobile dunes; fixed dunes) by random stratified sampling design along the Tyrrhenian coast of central Italy in areas with a high degree of biodiversity and naturalness. Vegetation and soil data were collected in the plots.
Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) confirmed that soil had a main role in driving focal dune species composition as found in other Mediterranean areas and indicated that three factors (field capacity, pH and CaCO3) sufficiently explain patterns of plant species. An inverse relation between field capacity, which proves to be the most decisive feature for differences in species ecological requirements between macrohabitats, and pH was observed. Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) showed that: i) the focal species of fixed dunes have a higher probability of occurrence and response curves that overlap at high field capacity and TOC values and at low pH, showing an opposite trend with respect to the species of embryonic and mixed dunes; ii) species of mixed dunes have a probability of occurrence linked to different values of CaCO3, with Ammophila arenaria showing its optimum at high CaCO3 values. Thus our results sustain the hypothesis that dune focal species, diagnostic and characteristic of coastal dune marcohabitats, have different ecological responses with respect to soil factors. Moreover, species within the same habitat can have different ecological responses due to species competition. Data about edaphic requirements of sand dune species and modelling of their ecological responses suggests that focal dune species can be bio-indicators of soil conditions and provide useful indications for conservation, monitoring and restoration of Mediterranean coastal habitats.

[Termes IGN] surface forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Extracting information from a polarimetric radar representation usually consists in decomposing it with target decomposition algorithms. This first step can be seen as a geometric analysis of the polarimetric information: the identification of physical radar scattering mechanisms. The problem is that average physical parameters are estimated. As a consequence, these parameters might not describe correctly any of the land cover types that can be mixed together into the radar resolution cell. Therefore, using the polarimetric parameters for land cover classification is challenging. The novelty of the method is to propose a thematic analysis of the polarimetric information preceding the geometric one. The objective is to assess if splitting off polarimetric information on a land cover type basis before applying usual target decomposition algorithms can produce more consistent radar scattering mechanisms when land cover classes are mixed inside the radar resolution cell. A cooperative fusion framework in which very high-resolution optical images are used to unmix physical radar scattering mechanisms is proposed. For bare soil and forests, we point out that a linear unmixing model applied to the covariance matrix is able to split off polarimetric information on a land cover type basis. The assessment of the unmixed radar matrices is carried out with polarimetric radar images from the Radarsat-2 satellite. It was found that despite speckle, the reconstructed radar information after the unmixing process is statistically relevant with the observations. The question whether the unmixed radar images contain relevant thematic information is more challenging, but results tend to validate this property. This method could be used to have a better estimation of vegetation biomass in the context of open forested areas. [Termes IGN] sol forestierRésumé : (Auteur) The main aim of the current study was to estimate the annual net nitrogen mineralization (NNM) flux in stands of different tree species growing on drained peatlands, as well as to clarify the effect of tree species, soil properties and litter on annual NNM dynamics. Three study sites were set up in May 2014: a downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) stand and a Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stand in Oxalis full-drained swamp (ODS) and a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stand in Myrtillus full-drained swamp (MDS). The NNM flux was estimated using the in situ method with incubated polyethylene bags. The highest value of NNM was found in stands that were growing on fertile ODS: 127.5 kg N ha–1 yr–1 and 87.7 kg N ha–1 yr–1, in the downy birch stand and in the Norway spruce stand, respectively. A significantly lower annual NNM flux (11.8 kg N ha–1 yr–1) occurred in the Scots pine stand growing in MDS. Nitrification was highest at fertile ODS sites and ammonification was the highest at the low fertility MDS site. For all study sites, positive correlation was found between soil temperature and NNM intensity. The difference in annual NNM between the downy birch stand and the Norway spruce stand growing on similar drained fertile peatlands was due to litter quality. The annual N input into the soil through leaf litter was the highest at the downy birch site where also the C/N ratio of litter was the lowest. The second highest N input into the soil was found in the spruce stand and the lowest in the pine stand. [Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Papua New Guinea (PNG) is saddled with frequent natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, droughts, floods, etc. Flooding, as a hydrological disaster to humankind’s niche, brings about a powerful and often sudden, pernicious change in the surface distribution of water on land, while the benevolence of flooding manifests in restoring the health of the thalweg from excessive siltation by redistributing the fertile sediments on the riverine floodplains. In respect to social, economic, and environmental perspectives, flooding is one of the most devastating disasters in PNG. This research is conducted to investigate the usefulness of remote sensing (RS), the geographic information system (GIS), and multi-criteria analysis (MCA) for flood susceptibility mapping. MCA methods such as weighted linear combination (WLC) and analytical hierarchy processes (AHP) were used to assess flood vulnerability in the Wahgi catchment area through RS and GIS technology. In the study, attention was focused on different parameters that cause flooding. These parameters include elevation, slope, distance from drainage, soil texture, soil drainage, rainfall, landform, and land use and land cover. The classes within parameters were ranked and suitably weighted depending on their influence to flooding with reference to the PNG Resource Information System (PNGRIS) metadata. The result of the analysis is a flood-susceptibility map showing the most vulnerable areas. This type of map is very useful for better management, planning, and mitigation of future flooding in the Wahgi catchment area. The validation of the flood-susceptibility map was carried out using past flood records in the study area.
