[Termes IGN] sol acideRésumé : (Auteur) Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the major environmental problems in coalmining districts. The present study explores the potential of high-resolution satellite (HRS) imagery, combined with field-based geochemical sampling, for investigating the AMD-related issues arising from artisanal coal mining activity in a part of North-Eastern India. The HRS imagery available from Indian remote sensing satellites (CARTOSAT-1 and RESOURCESAT-1) and QuickBird are used for this purpose. The study demonstrates that (1) the artisanal ‘rat-hole' type coal mines prevalent in the study area can be mapped to a fair extent through merged CARTOSAT-1 PAN and RESOURCESAT-1 LISS-IV imagery; (2) coal mining-induced enhanced dissolution of pyrites appears to be the main mechanism for the occurrence of AMD exacerbating the problem of acid rock drainage (ARD); and (3) HRS imagery can be used to detect iron precipitates on streambeds indicating the presence of AMD. [Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) A numerical simulator of satellite microwave radiometric observations of mountainous scenes, developed in a previous study, has been used to predict the relief effects on the measurements of a spaceborne radiometer. For this purpose, the trends of the error due to topography, i.e., the difference between the antenna temperature calculated for a topographically variable surface and that computed for a flat terrain versus the parameters representing the relief, have been analyzed. The analysis has been mainly performed for a mountainous area in the Alps by assuming a simplified land-cover scenario consisting of bare terrain with two roughness conditions (smooth and rough soils) and considering L- and C-bands, i.e., those most suitable for soil moisture retrieval. The results have revealed that the error in satellite microwave radiometric observations is particularly correlated to the mean values of the height and slope of the radiometric pixel, as well as to the standard deviations of the aspect angle and local incidence angle. Both a regression analysis and a neural-network approach have been applied to estimate the error as a function of the parameters representing the relief, using the simulator to build training and test sets. The prediction of the topography effects and their correction in radiometric images have turned out to be feasible, at least for the scenarios considered in this study. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The Soil Landscapes of Canada (SLC) is a national soil map and accompanying database of environmental information for all of Canada, produced and maintained by the Canadian Soil Information Service (CanSIS) which is a part of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The SLC maps were originally published as a set of paper products for individual provinces and regions. The maps were digitized in CanSIS, using one of the first geographic information systems in the world, and linked to soil and landscape attribute tables to serve an evolving variety of spatial modelling applications. The SLCs form the lowest level of the National ecological Framework for Canada. The latest public release of the SLC is version 3.2, which provides updated soil and landscape information for the agricultural areas of Canada. The SLC v3.2 digital coverage includes an extensive set of relational data tables. The component table lists the soil components in each agricultural polygon along with their predicted dominant slope, class, and extent. The soil component codes are also linked to soil attribute tables which define fundamental soil properties, such as classification and parent material, as well as a description of the soil horizons and key soil attributes to a depth of 100 cm. SLC v3.2 adds a new set of landform tables which identify the major landform type in each polygon and indicates the most likely soil components in the upper, mid slope, lower slope, and depressional positions. These soil and landform attributes are designed to support a wide variety of national and international environmental modelling applications, such as the prediction of soil quality change, soil carbon sequestration, and land productivity for different agricultural crops in response to agricultural policy, land management, and climate change scenarios. Future versions of the SLC are under development that will have improved spatial resolution and include soils data for areas beyond the present agricultural zone of Canada. [Termes IGN] validation des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data-sets are seeing increasing use in geology, geomorphology, forestry and urban mapping. The ease of use, affordability and operational flexibility of TLS suggest that demand for it is likely to increase in large-scale mapping studies. However, its advantages may remain restricted to specific environments, because of difficulties in defining bare-ground level in the presence of ground-level vegetation. This paper seeks to clarify the component contributions to TLS elevation error deriving from vegetation occlusion, scan co-registration error, point cloud georeferencing error and target position definition in TLS point cloud data. A multi-scan single-returns TLS point cloud data-set of very high resolution (~250 points/m2) was acquired for an 11 hectare area of open, substantially flat and 100% vegetated coastal saltmarsh, providing data for the empirical quantification of TLS error. Errors deriving from the sources discussed are quantified, clarifying the potential proportional contribution of vegetation to other error sources. Initial data validation is applied to the TLS point cloud data after application of a local-lowest-point selection process, and repeat validation tests are applied to the resulting filtered point cloud after application of a kriging-based error adjustment and data fusion with GPS. The final results highlight the problem of representing bare ground effectively within TLS data captured in the presence of dense ground vegetation and clarify the component contributions of elevation error deriving from surveying and data processing.
