[Termes IGN] programmation dynamiqueRésumé : (auteur) Choropleth maps visualize areal geographical data by grouping data into a few map classes and assigning different colors, shades, or patterns. Recent studies show that data uncertainty, commonly observed in real-life applications, should also be accounted for when determining the best classification scheme. Due to data uncertainty, a few studies note that map units might be placed in a wrong class, and the concept of map robustness has been introduced to minimize such misplacement. Recently, an algorithm has been developed to integrate robustness into the design of the optimal map classification scheme. However, the existing algorithm has two limitations: first, it is only suitable for certain robustness metrics. Second, when identifying the optimal class breaks, the existing algorithm requires predefined candidate class break values, which might lead to sub-optimal solutions. This paper resolves these issues by proposing a new model, namely, the Continuous Robust Map Classification Problem (CRMCP), and the associated solution approach. The CRMCP allows mapmakers to customize robustness metrics according to their data and applications. In addition, a particle swarm optimization algorithm is developed to solve the CRMCP. The model and algorithm are tested using American Community Survey data. Test results suggest that the new approach can find better solutions than the existing algorithm. The study improves the usability of choropleth maps when uncertain geographical attributes are involved and allows spatial analysts and decision-makers to incorporate robustness into the mapmaking process more flexibly. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) The present paper presents techniques for polyline simplification based on an artificial neural network within the constraints of generalization knowledge. The proposed method measures polyline shape characteristics that influence polyline simplification using abstracted descriptors and then introduces these descriptors into the artificial neural network as input properties. In total, 18 descriptors categorized into three types are presented in detail. In a second approach, map simplification principles are abstracted as controllers, imposed after the output layer of the trained artificial neural network to make the polyline simplification comply with these principles. This study worked with three controllers – a basic controller and two knowledge-based controllers. These descriptors and controllers abstracted from generalization knowledge were tested in experiments to determine their efficacy in polyline simplification based on the artificial neural network. The experimental results show that the utilization of abstracted descriptors and controllers can constrain the artificial neural network-based polyline simplification according to polyline shape characteristics and simplification principles. The large variety of representations that we have observed leads to problems of transfer and variations in analysis. In this article, we propose a representation, Regular Dot map (RD), and we compare it to 4 others routinely used to visualise post-disaster damage. Our comparison is based on a user study in which a set of participants carried out various tasks on multiple datasets using the various visualisations. We then analysed the behaviour during the experiment using three approaches: (1) quantitative analysis of user answers according to the reality on the ground, (2) quantitative analysis of user preferences in terms of perceived effectiveness and appearance, and (3) qualitative analysis of the data collected using an eye tracker. The results of this study lead us to believe that RD is the best compromise in terms of effectiveness among the various representations studied. However, such data are currently scarce due to the lack of human-related indicators with both high temporal resolution and long-term coverage that can be used in the process of population spatialization. Here, we estimate monthly 1-km gridded population distribution across China in 2015 using time-series mobile phone positioning data. We construct a hybrid downscaling model to map the gridded population by incorporating random forest and area-to-point kriging. The estimated monthly population products appear to capture inner-annual population variations, especially during special periods, such as the festival, holiday, and short-term labor flow period, which are characterized by large-scale population movements. Additionally, compared with census data, the hybrid model-based results obtained exhibit higher consistency than popular global population products across all spatial extents. Our monthly 1-km data products for the population distribution across China in 2015 provide a credible dataset that can be employed in studies aimed at accurate population-dependent decisions. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) Animated cartographic visualization incorporates the concept of geomedia presented in this Special Issue. The presented study aims to examine the effectiveness of spatial pattern and temporal trend recognition on animated choropleth maps. In a controlled laboratory experiment with participants and eye tracking, fifteen animated maps were used to show a different spatial patterns and temporal trends. The participants’ task was to correctly detect the patterns and trends on a choropleth map. The study results show that effective spatial pattern and temporal trend recognition on a choropleth map is related to participants’ visual behavior. Visual attention clustered in the central part of the choropleth map supports effective spatio-temporal relationship recognition. The larger the area covered by the fixation cluster, the higher the probability of correct temporal trend and spatial pattern recognition. However, animated choropleth maps are more suitable for presenting temporal trends than spatial patterns. Understanding the difficulty in the correct recognition of spatio-temporal relationships might be a reason for implementing techniques that support effective visual searches such as highlighting, cartographic redundancy, or interactive tools. For end-users, the presented study reveals the necessity of the application of a specific visual strategy. Focusing on the central part of the map is the most effective strategy for the recognition of spatio-temporal relationships.
