[Termes IGN] précision des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The choropleth map is a device used for the display of socioeconomic data associated with an areal partition of geographic space. Cartographers emphasize the need to standardize any raw count data by an area-based total before displaying the data in a choropleth map. The standardization process converts the raw data from an absolute measure into a relative measure. However, there is recognition that the standardizing process does not enable the map reader to distinguish between low–low and high–high numerator/denominator differences. This research uses concentration-based classification schemes using Lorenz curves to address some of these issues. A test data set of nonwhite birth rate by county in North Carolina is used to demonstrate how this approach differs from traditional mean–variance-based systems such as the Jenks’ optimal classification scheme. [Termes IGN] représentation multipleRésumé : (auteur) In its long history, cartography has always been at the forefront of adapting to new tools. The computer, first introduced 60 years ago, has represented perhaps the greatest change in how maps are made. The further combination of computers and communication technology changed how maps are distributed – and how they are used. Maps became more interactive and animated. The cloud, the nexus of computers and communication technology, is the most recent symbol of this change. While often simply defined as using the processing and storage capacity of data centres, the cloud is interpreted here as representing a workspace for the continued development of maps as a form of both analysis and communication. Examined are the development and formation of the cloud, the distribution of multi-scale pan-able (MSP) maps, and other related areas of cloud cartography. [Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (auteur) In this article, a new morphing method is proposed for two linear features at different scales, based on their entire structures (MLBES in abbreviation). First, the bend structures of the linear features are identified by using a constrained Delaunay triangulation (CDT in abbreviation) model and represented by binary bend-structure trees. By matching the independent bends represented by the bend-structure trees, corresponding independent bends are obtained. These corresponding independent bends are further used to match their child bends based on hierarchical bend structures so that corresponding bends are obtained. On this basis, the two linear features are split into pairs of corresponding subpolylines by the start and end points of the corresponding bends. Second, structures of the corresponding subpolylines are identified by the Douglas-Peucker algorithm and represented by binary line generalization trees (BLG-trees in abbreviation). The corresponding subpolylines are split into smaller corresponding subpolylines by matching the nodes of the BLG-trees. Third, the corresponding points are identified by using the linear interpolation algorithm for every pair of corresponding subpolylines. Finally, straight-line trajectories are employed to generate a family of intermediate-scale linear features. By comparison with other methods, it is found that MLBES is accurate and efficient. [Termes IGN] système d'extension spatialRésumé : (Auteur) Linear features are represented on paper or digital maps with polyline geometries. Sampling, discretization, and generalization processes result in polylines of a length smaller than that of the actual features. In addition, semantics associated to the original line features may be lost. This becomes more significant for coarse sampling and/or high degree of generalization. This paper introduces a data structure that can alleviate this problem, by preserving the attributes and semantic characteristics associated to the original features in cartographic representation. The structure can handle both linear features and polygon outlines. Various compression methods have been examined. The structure has been implemented and tested with both synthetic and real datasets. Extensions to spatiotemporal features, like trajectories, have also been considered.
