[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) This paper addresses the issue of expressivity conveyed by the graphical representations of territory. In order to improve the relevancy between graphical representations and effective uses of those representations, expressivity should be enhanced in map and geovisualisation design. Based on knowledge and methods coming from expressive rendering, a sub-domain of computer graphics, we proposed specific rendering techniques for map and geovisualisation design, from the specification of styles. Two stylisation projects, in map design (MapStyle) and in 3D geovisualisation design (Plu++), provide a high diversity of graphical representations of the territory, aiming at making them relevant for many uses. Exploring the space of possible graphical representations is also a way to approach the issue of perception and cognition of complex phenomena on the territory. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) A brief overview is given of the quality control of a 1:25,000 scale topographic map, carried out by the Croatian Geodetic Institute (CGI). As the topic of the aesthetics of the topographic map has, in the authors’ opinion, not been extensively covered, the paper concentrates on this topic. The paper focuses on devising an aesthetic standard relating mainly to the representation of relief. In fact, aesthetics can be controlled indirectly in terms of relief and water course alignment, the smoothness of contour lines, the non-existence of bonded contour lines and rock representation justification. A comparison between quality control at the CGI and quality elements according to contemporary standards was carried out. The presence of data-quality elements was registered in accordance with the ISO guidelines. A proposal for several data-quality measures for aesthetics related to relief representation is also given. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) A design pattern approach for conceptualizing the cartographic design process is presented. A design pattern presents a solution to a problem by describing solutions for the commonalities in problems to be solved. The commonalities of the cartographic design process are identified and MapDesign is described, a design pattern for generating a set of maps from big geospatial data. The MapDesign pattern allows increased map throughput through automation and distributed processing, which frees up time for cartographers and geographic information scientists to make sense of big geospatial data and to select and refine map designs. The description of the MapDesign pattern can aid software developers in understanding how to build tools that allow automation and distributed processing in parts of the map design process for visualizing big geospatial data. Conversely, the visual nature of design patterns can assist cartographers with understanding how software components interact to produce maps. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article demonstrates a working method to automatically detect and prune portions of waterbody polygons to support creation of a multi-scale hydrographic database. Water features are sensitive to scale change, therefore multiple representations are required to maintain visual and geographic logic at smaller scales. Partial pruning of polygonal features – such as long, sinuous reservoir arms, stream channels too narrow at the target scale, and islands that begin to coalesce – entails concurrent management of the length and width of polygonal features as well as integrating pruned polygons with other generalized point and linear hydrographic features to maintain stream network connectivity. The implementation follows data representation standards developed by the US Geological Survey (USGS) for the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Portions of polygonal rivers, streams, and canals are automatically characterized for width, length, and connectivity. This article describes an algorithm for automatic detection and subsequent processing, and shows results for a sample of NHD subbasins in different landscape conditions in the US.
