[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Linear building groups are common patterns and important local structures in large scale maps, which should be carefully generalized. This paper uses the idea of line simplification to typify linear building groups. Firstly, based on the stroke idea, the linear building groups are detected that each building group is related by only one stroke; the collinear and curvilinear patterns are distinguished by calculating the overlap rate between the defined auxiliary polygon and its oriented bounding box. Secondly, the stroke is simplified by removing one node in each iterative step; and the remained nodes are reallocated to the new positions, which serves as the centroids location of the newly typified buildings. Third, the representation (size, shape, elongation, and orientation) of the newly typified buildings are calculated by the geometry information of their corresponding parent buildings. The typification method can be carried out as a progressive process, which iterates over the three steps to derive continuous typification results. The method is tested on two building datasets, and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve good performance by well preserving the original linear patterns in the generalized building groups. [Termes IGN] répartition géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Data classification, i.e. organising data items in groups (classes), is a general technique widely used in data visualisation and cartography, in particular, for creation of choropleth maps. Conventionally, data are classified by dividing the data range into intervals and assigning the same symbol or colour to all data falling within an interval. For instance, the intervals may be of the same length or may include the same number of data items. We propose a method for defining intervals so that some quantity represented by values of another attribute is equally distributed among the classes. This kind of classification supports exploratory analysis of relationships between the attribute used for the classification and the distribution of the phenomenon whose quantity is represented by the additional attribute. The approach may be especially useful when the distribution of the phenomenon is very unequal, with many data items having zero or low quantities and quite a few items having larger quantities. With such a distribution, standard statistical analysis of the relationships may be problematic. We demonstrate the potential of the approach by analysing data referring to a set of spatially distributed people (patients) in relationship to characteristics of the areas in which the people live. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses the suitability of different cartographic design variants for visually communicating recommended routes. We performed a user study, investigating the potential of six different design variants (color hue, distortion, length distortion, size, spacing, and symbols) for influencing route choice using cartographic visualization methods while recommending a longer, but less congested route. The visualizations for all design variants have been prepared in three different levels of intensity of modification (weak, medium, and strong). Although the input data (traffic density) is the same for all representation methods, variations are each visualized using different cartographic design principles. Our results showed that in general, for the majority of routing scenarios, the participants’ route choice has been significantly influenced toward choosing the recommended route – indicating that the modification of route visualizations does actually lead to a different route choice behavior. Results further revealed that for most variants, willingness to choose the recommended route increases with higher intensity of modification. While some of the design variants like symbols or length distortion have been found effective for recommending routes at all levels of intensity, others like size and spacing have not been found suitable. A comparison between route choices and estimated route characteristics suggested a close relationship between willingness to choose the recommended route and the characteristics participants associate with the representation. In particular, route visualizations that create an impression of faster, more convenient, or more fluent travel experience are more likely to influence route choice behavior. [Termes IGN] populationRésumé : (auteur) Gridded population data is widely used to map fine scale population patterns and dynamics to understand associated human-environmental processes for global change research, disaster risk assessment and other domains. This study mapped gridded population across Germany using weighting layers from building density, building height (both from previous studies) and building type datasets, all created from freely available, temporally and globally consistent Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data. We first produced and validated a nation-wide dataset of predominant residential and non-residential building types. We then examined the impact of different weighting layers from density, type and height on top-down dasymetric mapping quality across scales. We finally performed a nation-wide bottom-up population estimate based on the three datasets. We found that integrating building types into dasymetric mapping is helpful at fine scale, as population is not redistributed to non-residential areas. Building density improved the overall quality of population estimates at all scales compared to using a binary building layer. Most importantly, we found that the combined use of density and height, i.e. volume, considerably increased mapping quality in general and with regard to regional discrepancy by largely eliminating systematic underestimation in dense agglomerations and overestimation in rural areas. We also found that building density, type and volume, together with living floor area per capita, are suitable to produce accurate large-area bottom-up population estimates. Conventional map projections are defined by mathematical formulas, and are thereby limited in their ability to control that distortion by the complexity of those formulas. Piecewise map projections based on interpolation onto unstructured meshes have no such constraints, and can therefore create maps that are better suited to many use cases. A method using multi-dimensional optimization to optimize such map projections is presented here, and demonstrated by the generation of several new map projections. These map projections are presented as the Danseiji projections, along with their potential applications.
