[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Online, web-based cartography workflows use a dizzying variety of software suites, libraries, and programming languages. This proliferation of mapmaking technologies, often developed from a software engineering rather than a cartographic foundation, creates a series of challenges for cartography education, research, and practice. To address these challenges, we introduce a JavaScript-based open-source framework for web-based cartography and data visualization. It is built on top of existing open web standards that are already in intensive use for online mapmaking today, but provides a framework that is firmly based on cartographic and visualization theory rather than software engineering concepts. Specifically, we adopt concepts from Bertin’s Semiology of Graphics and Wilkinson’s Grammar of Graphics to create a language with a limited number of core concepts and verbs that are combined in a declarative style of “writing” visualizations. In this paper, we posit a series of design guidelines that have informed our approach, and discuss how we translate these tenets into a software implementation and framework with specific use cases and examples. We frame the development of the software and the discussion specifically in the context of the use of such tools in cartography education. With this framework, we hope to provide an example of a software for web-based data visualization that is in sync with cartographic theories and objectives. Such approaches allow for potentially greater cartographic flexibility and creativity, as well as easier adoption in cartography courses. [Termes IGN] optimisation (mathématiques)Résumé : (auteur) Choropleth mapping provides a simple but effective visual presentation of geographical data. Traditional choropleth mapping methods assume that data to be displayed are certain. This may not be true for many real-world problems. For example, attributes generated based on surveys may contain sampling and non-sampling error, and results generated using statistical inferences often come with a certain level of uncertainty. In recent years, several studies have incorporated uncertain geographical attributes into choropleth mapping with a primary focus on identifying the most homogeneous classes. However, no studies have yet accounted for the possibility that an areal unit might be placed in a wrong class due to data uncertainty. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a robustness measure and incorporating it into the optimal design of choropleth maps. In particular, this study proposes a discretization method to solve the new optimization problem along with a novel theoretical bound to evaluate solution quality. The new approach is applied to map the American Community Survey data. Test results suggest a tradeoff between within-class homogeneity and robustness. The study provides an important perspective on addressing data uncertainty in choropleth map design and offers a new approach for spatial analysts and decision-makers to incorporate robustness into the mapmaking process. A polyline is first transformed into a corresponding Fourier descriptor consisting of normalized Fourier-series-expansion coefficients. Then, the most significant finite components of the Fourier descriptor are selected and ranked to constitute the polyline constrained Fourier descriptor. Using Shannon’s information theory, information content of the constrained Fourier-descriptor components is defined. Next, head/tail breaks are introduced to iteratively divide the constrained Fourier descriptor into head and tail components according to the heavy-tailed distribution of information contents. Thus, simplified polylines are reconstructed using ordered heads generated from head/tail breaks. Finally, the radical law is introduced and applied to model multiscale polyline representation by quantifying the scale of each simplified polyline. Three experiments are designed and conducted to evaluate the proposed model. The results demonstrate that the proposed model is valid and efficient for quantifying multiscale polyline representation. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Road-network data compression or simplification reduces the size of the network to occupy less storage with the aim to fit small form-factor routing devices, mobile devices, or embedded systems. Simplification (a) reduces the storage cost of memory and disks, and (b) reduces the I/O and communication overhead. There are several road network compression techniques proposed in the literature. These techniques are evaluated by their compression ratios. However, none of these techniques takes into consideration the possibility that the generated compressed data can be used directly in Map-matching operation which is an essential component for all location-aware services. Map-matching matches a measured latitude and longitude of an object to an edge in the road network graph. In this paper, we propose a novel simplification technique, named COMA, that (1) significantly reduces the size of a given road network graph, (2) achieves high map-matching quality on the simplified graph, and (3) enables the generated compressed road network graph to be used directly in map-matching and location-based applications without a need to decompress it beforehand. COMA smartly deletes those nodes and edges that will not affect the graph connectivity nor causing much of ambiguity in the map-matching of objects’ location. COMA employs a controllable parameter; termed a conflict factor C, whereby location aware services can trade the compression gain with map-matching accuracy at varying granularity. We show that the time complexity of our COMA algorithm is O(|N|log|N|). Intensive experimental evaluation based on a real implementation and data demonstrates that COMA can achieve about a 75% compression-ratio while preserving high map-matching quality.
