[Termes IGN] VRMLRésumé : (Auteur) Approximately fifty percent of the population cannot visualize three-dimensional concepts from a two-dimensional drawing. In casual surveys, it appears that this percentage is true even in spatially related fields such as surveying/geomatics. The inability to visualize three-dimensional concepts may affect even the brightest of students in such ways as hindering their ability to understand the underlying concepts. This paper explores using computer animation to help students visualize, and thus understand, three-dimensional concepts.
[Termes IGN] primitive géométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) Extracting roads from satellite images is an important task in both research and practice. This work presents an improved model for road detection based on the principles of perceptual organization and classification fusion in human vision system (HVS). The model consists of four levels: pixels, primitives, structures and objects, and two additional sub-processes: automatic classification of road scenes and global integration of multiform roads. Based on the model, a novel algorithm for detecting roads from satellite images is also proposed, in which two types of road primitives, namely blob-like primitive and line-like primitive are defined, measured, extracted and linked using different methods for dissimilar road scenes. A hierarchical search strategy driven by saliency measurement is adopted in both linking processes. The blob primitives are linked using heuristic grouping and the line primitives are connected through genetic algorithm (GA) evolution. Finally, all of the linked road segments are normalized with centre-main lines and integrated into global smooth road curves through tensor voting. Experimental results show that the algorithm is capable of detecting multiform roads from real satellite images with high adaptability and reliability. [Termes IGN] relation topologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In the process of topographic map updating, spatial conflicts (inconsistency) between rivers and contours may be created. This project studies the particularity and complexity of the relationships between rivers and contours, and develops a method for automatic detection of the spatial conflicts between them. This method consists of a refined descriptive spatial model (called a topological chain), an algorithm for the computation of spatial relations, and a set of rules for the determination of spatial conflicts. In the spatial relation model, the topological relationships, order relationships, and metric relationships are integrated to describe the line-line spatial relationships. The rules are derived from the natural relations between rivers and contours in the real world. The effectiveness of this method has been verified by using the national 1:50 000 topographic map databases. An accuracy of 91% has been achieved. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of map design is to create, in the mind of map users, an abstraction of the real world appropriate to the map's purpose. The success of the design depends not only on the cartographer's skill but also on the user's ability to read the map and on the particular circumstances of its use. If the user does not understand the meaning of the map symbols, this may lead to frustration or misinterpretations. If, in a mobile map context, users can be provided, in real-time, with map symbols adapted to particular use situations and user preferences, more effective map reading could result. This paper studies those user aspects where map symbols and other visualization are adapted for mobile users' specific needs. A discussion on the importance of understanding cartographic principles in mobile map design is followed by the description of an adaptive mobile map service implemented within an EU project called "GiMoDig." This service delivers maps with different point of interest (PoI) symbols and different map designs for varying user groups in different use situations. The paper describes how the cartographic design was evaluated and how the intuitivity of the map symbols was tested. Finally, conclusions and recommendations for future research topics are discussed.
