[Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) This study evaluates the influence of different cartographic representations of in-car navigation systems on visual demand, subjective preference, and navigational error. It takes into account the type and complexity of the representation, maneuvering complexity, road layout, and driver gender. A group of 28 drivers (14 male and 14 female) participated in this experiment which was performed in a low-cost driving simulator. The tests were performed on a limited number of instances for each type of representation, and their purpose was to carry out a preliminary assessment and provide future avenues for further studies. Data collected for the visual demand study were analyzed using non-parametric statistical analyses. Results confirmed previous research that showed that different levels of design complexity significantly influence visual demand. Non-grid-like road networks, for example, influence significantly visual demand and navigational error. An analysis of simple maneuvers on a grid-like road network showed that static and blinking arrows did not present significant differences. From the set of representations analyzed to assess visual demand, both arrows were equally efficient. From a gender perspective, women seem to look at the display more than men, but this factor was not significant. With respect to subjective preferences, drivers prefer representations with mimetic landmarks when they perform straight-ahead tasks. For maneuvering tasks, landmarks in a perspective model created higher visual demands. [Termes IGN] représentation mentale spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The acquisition and conceptualization of spatial knowledge are important topics in human spatial cognition. At the global scale, maps are our primary graphic source of information; however, they distort the size and shape of geographic features. If a distorted reference is used and the reader assumes it to be accurate, it may inappropriately influence decision making and, possibly, the shape of our global-scale cognitive maps. This paper examines trends in perception of land area, using equal-area and non-equal-area references, as well as investigating how map-projection knowledge can influence interpretation of land area. Results from the land-area studies show that map readers attempted compensation for projection distortion only when using the Mercator projection as a reference, and only for certain regions displayed on the Mercator projection. For other reference materials there is no attempted compensation for perceived distortion, even when participants believe that the reference is distorting land area. It is also apparent that most participants have limited projection knowledge and have difficulty transferring this knowledge to other projections or to practical application tasks. Both of these findings have implications for understanding perceptual issues in map reading and for determining where distortions can be introduced at the encoding stage of cognitive map development. [Termes IGN] Mercator (logiciel)Résumé : (Editeur) The contributions in this book address the use of ‘different’ geo-communication tools that could allow for improved visualization of geography- by incorporating ART. It is envisaged that the work of this book will help to re-define how we can better visualise Space and Place, considering: Science, Technology and Art. The book is therefore a celebration of the ‘meeting point’ between Art and Cartography. It provides a starting point for a journey that will explore innovative methods and techniques for representing our world using the complementary techniques from Art, Science and technology. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Today, the technical generation of modern perspective views (so-called 3D maps) for static, animated, and dynamic use is highly advanced. Nevertheless, aspects of the design of such views and of their impact on readers have rarely been investigated in cartographic research. The establishment of cartographic design principles is missing, to a large extent. Within the framework of a research project, propositions for such principles were derived by evaluating settings and options for specific graphic variables. Based on an inventory of design aspects and graphic variables for 3D maps, selected cues for two major design aspects (degree of abstraction and size of map objects) and five different graphic variables (viewing inclination, zoom factor, light direction, haze density, and sky structure) were evaluated by means of 3D map examples and expert interviews. A set of cartographic design principles was derived from this evaluation and proposed for more detailed user tests. The proposed design principles could also be seen as the beginning of a framework to extend cartographic theory and assist map authors in the iterative design process.
