[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) The possibility of digital interactivity requires us to reenvision the map reader as the map user, and to address the perceptual, cognitive, cultural, and practical considerations that influence the user’s experience with interactive maps and visualizations. In this article, we present an agenda for empirical research on this user and the interactive designs he or she employs. The research agenda is a result of a multi-stage discussion among international scholars facilitated by the International Cartographic Association that included an early round of position papers and two subsequent workshops to narrow into pressing themes and important research opportunities. The focus of our discussion is epistemological and reflects the wide interdisciplinary influences on user studies in cartography. The opportunities are presented as imperatives that cross basic research and user-centered design studies, and identify practical impediments to empirical research, emerging interdisciplinary recommendations to improve user studies, and key research needs specific to the study of interactive maps and visualizations. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Findings of empirical studies of spatial memory using maps are direct responses to the successful transfer and processing of map information. The memory performance of map users is an important indication of the quality of a map design. Studies of spatial memory have mainly relied on recall performances, but maps can be used in various ways depending on the map user's task and applied strategy. Therefore, one memory paradigm does not cover the entire spectrum of options for examining the retrieval of map information. Three different experiments were designed to analyze and compare memory performances using different map information in recall and recognition (combining episodic and semantic memory) paradigms. The results demonstrate that map complexity, as varied by the amount of displayed map detail, contributes significantly to memory performance. Moreover, memory enhancement affected by map-structuring elements (grids) depends on the respective paradigm and also on the visual appearance of the structuring elements. Both paradigms for examining the influence of map information on cognitive processing can be applied specifically to analyze the efficiency of map designs. On the basis of the different effects of map information, a reasoned application of these paradigms to test map designs is indispensable. The work described here is developed in the context of the CartASUR project which specifically addresses these deficiencies of noise maps. CartASUR collected perceptual data in several places of Paris using a survey and aiming to define new urban soundscape indicators to offer the possibility of several interpretations depending on the users’ personal and cultural characteristics, and to show them on maps. In this chapter, the indicators sound pleasantness and global loudness are presented. Several cartographic proposals are made to portray indicators during one, two, or three periods (day, evening, night) on maps, and their characteristic features (symbol design, visual variables) are discussed. Cartographic proposals are assessed through a survey which addresses the understanding of cartographic symbols and global properties of maps. The survey concludes that map readers prefer to view complete (both sound pleasantness and global loudness) and precise (three measurement periods) information, even when the amount of information leads to complex maps, which are considered the most attractive and useful. Nevertheless, the survey shows that these complex maps are not well interpreted by a large part of map readers. Use of visual variables color and quantity is discussed and proposals are made to improve symbol understanding.

[Termes IGN] vision binoculaireRésumé : (éditeur) Focusing on recent advances in analytical techniques, this third edition of Andrew Duchowski’s successful guide has been revised and extended. It includes new chapters on calibration accuracy, precision and correction; advanced eye movement analysis; binocular eye movement analysis; practical gaze analytics; eye movement synthesis. Eye Tracking Methodology opens with useful background information, including an introduction to the human visual system and key issues in visual perception and eye movement. The author then surveys eye-tracking devices and provides a detailed introduction to the technical requirements necessary for installing a system and developing an application program. Modern programming examples (in Python) are included and the author outlines the gaze analytics pipeline, a step-by-step data processing sequence from raw data to statistical analysis. Focusing on the use of modern video-based, corneal-reflection eye trackers – the most widely available and affordable types of systems, Andrew Duchowski takes a look at a number of interesting and challenging applications in human factors, collaborative systems, virtual reality, marketing and advertising. His primary focus is on methodology, and how analysis of eye movements can enhance research and development of anything that is inspected visually.
