[Termes IGN] zone inondableRésumé : (auteur) Estimating flood discharge at ungauged sites is a significant challenge facing water resources planners and engineers during the planning and design of hydraulic structures, managing flood prone zones, and operating artificial waterbodies. Developing more robust models to improve the reliability of flood discharge estimations is thus very useful. The role of ecological attributes including land use/land cover (LULC), hydrologic soil groups (HSG), and watershed physical characteristics (area, main stream length, average slope), and watershed shape coefficients (form, compactness, circularity, and elongation) in explaining the overall variation in flood magnitude in 39 watersheds, located in the southern basin of the Caspian Sea, was investigated. As the LULC and HSG were found to play a significant role in explaining total variation (40–89%) in flood magnitudes, their inclusion in the estimation of flood magnitudes can provide more reliable estimates of flood risk and magnitude. [Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (auteur) The purpose of the current study is to predict accident hot spots in different locations using Geographic Information System (GIS) and fuzzy logic. The data used contained accident types and occurrence time. Fatality and injury were also studied with spatial-temporal analysis. Moreover, accident hot spots were predicted performing Weighted Overlay Method (WOM) and Fuzzy Overlay Method (FOM), which are widely used in decision making and alternatives analysis based on the results obtained from Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Point Density (PD) method was used to verify hot spots in urban region that resulted from the mentioned two methods. Traffic accidents’ hot spots were predicted for Irbid City in Jordan using the data of the accidents that occurred between 2013 and 2015. Both WOM and FOM proved to be successful in identifying hot spots in parts of study area when verified to PD surface. Final results showed that eight hot spots were pointed out; three are road sections and five are major intersections, which were analyzed to get accident-contributing factors and suggest the proper remedies. [Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (auteur) Geographic information systems (GIS) can be used to map the geographical distribution of the prevalence of disease, trends in disease transmission, and to spatially model environmental aspects of disease occurrence. The aim of this study is to discuss a GIS application created to produce mapping and cluster modeling of three diseases in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: diabetes, asthma, and hypertension. Data about these diseases were obtained from health centers’ registered patient records. These data were spatially evaluated using several spatial–statistical analytical models, including kernel and hotspot models. These models were created to explore and display the disparate patterns of the selected diseases and to illustrate areas of high concentration, and may be invaluable in understanding local patterns of diseases and their geographical associations. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) About 30% of the total global economic loss inflicted by natural hazards is caused by flooding. Among them, the most serious situation is urban flooding. Urban impervious surface enhances storm runoff and overwhelms the drainage capacity of the storm sewer system, while the urban socioeconomic characteristics most often exacerbate them even more vulnerable to urban flooding impacts. Currently, there is still a significant knowledge gap of comparable assessment and understanding of minority's and non-minority's vulnerability. Therefore, this study designs a quantitative thematic mapping method–location quotient (LQ), using Birmingham, Alabama, USA as the study area. Urban residents' vulnerability to flooding is then analyzed demographically using LQ with census data. Comparing with the widely used social vulnerability index (SVI), LQ is more robust, which not only provides more detailed measurements of both the minority's and the White's vulnerability, but also shows a direct comparison for all populations with finer information about their potential spatial risk assessment. Although SVI showed the Shades Creek is the most vulnerable area with a SVI value above 0.75, only 228 Hispanic people and 2290 African-American live there that is not a significant aggregation of minorities in Birmingham; however, a total White population 12,872 is identified by LQ with a significant aggregation in the Shades Creek. Overall, LQ suggests that the White populations are highly and significantly concentrated in the flood areas, while SVI never considered the White as vulnerable. LQ further indicates that the concentration of minorities (i.e., 88,895) and vulnerable houses (i.e., 26,235) are much higher compared to the numbers of the minorities and houses indicated by SVI, which are only 11,772 and 8323, respectively. The LQ based thematic mapping, as a promising method for vulnerability assessment of urban hazards and risks, can make a significant contribution to hazard management efforts to reduce urban vulnerability and hence enhance urban resilience to hazards in the future. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) We present our contribution to the geovisualization and visual analysis of hydraulic simulation data, based on an interdisciplinary research work undertaken by researchers in geographic information sciences and in hydraulics. The positive feedback loop between researchers favored the proposal of visualization tools enabling visual reasoning on hydraulic simulated data so as to infer knowledge on the simulation model. We interactively explore and design 2D multi-scale styles to render hydraulic simulated data, in order to support the identification over large simulation domains of possible local inconsistencies related to input simulation data, simulation parameters or simulation workflow. Models have been implemented into QGIS and are reusable for other input data and territories.
