In the study of spatial phenomena, man's scope of direct observation is very limited, and the only way we can systematically enlarge that scope is to diminish the earth to the point where we can encompass it. Just as some scientists must enlarge their objects of observation in order to study them, as by microscope or telescope, the cartographer must reduce the earth so that the geographer may study it. Furthermore, the map is vital to the geographer's communication of scientific conclusions. Mathematical equations and literary phrases are useful, but they are no substitute for the spatial eloquence of the map.
