[Termes IGN] réseau neuronal convolutifRésumé : (auteur) Semantic segmentation of remote sensing images enables in particular land-cover map generation for a given set of classes. Very recent literature has shown the superior performance of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) for many tasks, from object recognition to semantic labelling, including the classification of Very High Resolution (VHR) satellite images. However, while plethora of works aim at improving object delineation on geographically restricted areas, few tend to solve this classification task at very large scales. New issues occur such as intra-class class variability, diachrony between surveys, and the appearance of new classes in a specific area, that do not exist in the predefined set of labels. Therefore, this work intends to (i) perform large scale classification and to (ii) expand a set of land-cover classes, using the off-the-shelf model learnt in a specific area of interest and adapting it to unseen areas. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) The use of geoportals facilitates access to reference topographic representations (IGN1, OSM2, etc.). In most cases, geoportals do not offer legend to users, thus impacting the interpretation and assimilation of visualised geographic information. Likewise, in some cases, particularly in border areas, geoportals provide heterogeneous representations of the territory that are difficult for users to interpret. In this context, the major challenge is to enrich the existing knowledge of cartographic design in order to produce easily interpretable cartographic representations that minimise the use of the legend. We propose a user-centred cartographic design model based on two key concepts: the visual signature and the cartographic family. These two concepts allow a map producer to design a map by taking into account the elements of legend learnt by users during their different cartographic experiences. In order to validate our model, we test it to design homogeneous cartographic representation at the Franco-Swiss border. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) A brief overview is given of the quality control of a 1:25,000 scale topographic map, carried out by the Croatian Geodetic Institute (CGI). As the topic of the aesthetics of the topographic map has, in the authors’ opinion, not been extensively covered, the paper concentrates on this topic. The paper focuses on devising an aesthetic standard relating mainly to the representation of relief. In fact, aesthetics can be controlled indirectly in terms of relief and water course alignment, the smoothness of contour lines, the non-existence of bonded contour lines and rock representation justification. A comparison between quality control at the CGI and quality elements according to contemporary standards was carried out. The presence of data-quality elements was registered in accordance with the ISO guidelines. A proposal for several data-quality measures for aesthetics related to relief representation is also given. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article demonstrates a working method to automatically detect and prune portions of waterbody polygons to support creation of a multi-scale hydrographic database. Water features are sensitive to scale change, therefore multiple representations are required to maintain visual and geographic logic at smaller scales. Partial pruning of polygonal features – such as long, sinuous reservoir arms, stream channels too narrow at the target scale, and islands that begin to coalesce – entails concurrent management of the length and width of polygonal features as well as integrating pruned polygons with other generalized point and linear hydrographic features to maintain stream network connectivity. The implementation follows data representation standards developed by the US Geological Survey (USGS) for the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Portions of polygonal rivers, streams, and canals are automatically characterized for width, length, and connectivity. This article describes an algorithm for automatic detection and subsequent processing, and shows results for a sample of NHD subbasins in different landscape conditions in the US.
