[Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (Auteur) With the increasing point densities of airborne laser scanning surveys, the applications of the generated point clouds have evolved from the production of digital terrain models to 3D modelling of a wide variety of objects. Likewise in quality control procedures criteria for height accuracy are extended with measures to describe the planimetric accuracy. This paper introduces a measure for the potential accuracy of outlining objects in a point cloud. It describes how this accuracy can be verified with the use of ridge lines of gable roofs in strip overlaps. Because of the high accuracy of modern laser scanning surveys, the influence of roof tiles onto the estimation of ridge lines is explicitly modelled. New selection criteria are introduced that allow an automated, reliable and accurate extraction of ridge lines from point clouds. The applicability of the procedure is demonstrated in a pilot project in an area covering 100,000 ha with around 20 billion points. The Canny edge detector is applied to perform multispectral edge detection. The detected edge features are then utilized in a multiscale segmentation loop, and the merge procedure for adjacent image objects is controlled by a separability criterion that combines edge information with segmentation scale. The significance of the edge is measured by adjacent partitioned regions to perform edge assessment. The present method is based on a half-partition structure, which is composed of three steps: single edge detection, separated pixel grouping, and significant feature calculation. The spectral distance of the half-partitions separated by the edge is calculated, compared, and integrated into the edge information. The results show that the proposed approach works well on satellite multispectral images of a coastal area. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents an algorithmic approach to the problem of finding symmetries in building footprints, which is motivated by map generalization tasks such as symmetry-preserving building simplification and symmetry-aware grouping and aggregation. Moreover, symmetries in building footprints may be used for landmark selection and building classification. The presented method builds up on existing methods for symmetry detection in vector data that use algorithms for string matching. It detects both mirror symmetries and repetitions of geometric structures. In addition to the existing vector-based methods, the new method finds partial symmetries in polygons while allowing for small geometric errors and, based on a least-squares approach, computes optimally adjusted mirror axes and assesses their quality. Finally, the problem of grouping symmetry relations is addressed with an algorithm that finds mirror axes that are almost collinear. The presented approach was tested on a large building dataset of the metropolitan Boston area and its results were compared with results that were manually generated in an empirical test. The symmetry relations that the participants of the test considered most important were found by the algorithm. Future work will deal with the integration of information on symmetry relations into algorithms for map generalization. The method is based on extraction of fractal-based features from the hyperspectral data. The features have been generated using spectral fractal dimension of the spectral response curves (SRCs) after smoothing, interpolating and segmenting the curves. The new features so generated have then been used to classify hyperspectral data. Comparing the post classification accuracies with some other conventional dimensionality reduction methods, it has been found that the proposed method, with less computational complexity than the conventional methods, is able to provide classification accuracy statistically equivalent to those from conventional methods. [Termes IGN] peuplement forestierRésumé : (Auteur) Since the height horizon remains undetected in the vast majority of height series sampled in forest stands, even of notable ages, the realism of the traditional asymptotic-size modelling assumption is questioned. The aims of the study were to present an original non-asymptotic growth model and to test its accuracy against asymptotic-size equations. The equation proposed is a first-order four-parameter autonomous differential equation. The related sigmoid size curve has a parabolic branch of time. It was tested on 349 old growth series of top height (1047 stem analyses) selected to explore the maximum observed ranges of age and site conditions in seven temperate tree species growing in pure and even-aged stands. The fitting accuracy of this equation and three classical asymptotic-size growth equations (Richards, Hossfeld IV and Korf equations) were compared, with parameterizations of increasing flexibility. For the different parameterizations, the proposed growth equation showed higher performances than asymptotic growth equations, attributed to its non-asymptotic property and to the mathematical independence between parameters related to the inflection point and late growth. Top height growth was therefore accurately modelled by a sigmoid curve not based on the asymptotic-size assumption. This equation may be of general relevance to tree growth modelling.
