[Termes IGN] variable aléatoireRésumé : (auteur) Recovering the camera orientation is a fundamental problem in photogrammetry for precision 3D recovery, orthophoto generation, and image registration. In this paper, we achieve this goal by fusing the image information with information extracted from different modalities, including lidar and GIS. In contrast to other approaches, which require feature correspondences, our approach exploits edges across the modalities without the necessity to explicitly establish correspondences. In the proposed approach, extracted edges from different modalities are not required to have analytical forms. This flexibility is achieved by minimizing a new cost function using a Bayesian approach, which takes the Euclidean distances between the projected edges extracted from the other data source and the edges extracted from the reference image as its random variable. The proposed formulation minimizes the overall distances between the sets of edges iteratively, such that the end product results in the correct camera parameters for the reference image as well as matching features across the modalities. The initial solution can be obtained from GPS/IMU data. The formulation is shown to successfully handle noise and missing observations in edges. Point matching methods may fail for oblique images, especially high oblique images. We eliminate the requirement for exact point-to-point matching. The feasibility of the method is experimented with nadir and oblique images. When conventional thematic maps, such as proportional symbol maps or point diagram maps, are used to represent these data, the maps appear cluttered if the point data volumes are relatively large or cover a relatively dense region. To overcome these limitations, we propose a new type of thematic map for statistical data associated with geographic points: the point grid map. In a point grid map, an input point data set is transformed into a grid in which each point is represented by a square grid cell of equal size while preserving the relative position of each point, which leads to a clear and uncluttered appearance, and the grid cells can be shaded or patterned with symbols or diagrams according to the attributes of the points. We present an algorithm to construct a point grid map and test it with several simulated and real data sets. Furthermore, we present some variants of the point grid map. [Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (auteur) The problem of determining visibility locations (VLs) on/inside a domain bounded by a planar C1-continuous curve (without vertices), such that entire domain is covered, is discussed in this paper. The curved boundary has been used without being approximated into lines or polygons. Initially, a few observations regarding the VLs for a curved boundary have been made. It is proposed that the set of VLs required to cover the domain be placed in a manner that the VLs and the lines connecting them form a spanning tree. Along with other observations, an algorithm has been provided which gives a near optimal number of VLs. The obtained number of VLs is then compared with a visibility disjoint set, called as witness points, to obtain a measure of the ‘nearness’ of the number of VLs to the optimum. The experiments on different curved shapes illustrate that the algorithm captures the optimal solution for many shapes and near-optimal for most others. [Termes IGN] translationRésumé : (auteur) We present a novel structure from motion pipeline, which estimates motion and wiry 3D structure from imaged line segments across multiple views. Although the position and orientation of line segments can be determined more accurately than point features, the instability of their endpoints and the fact that lines are not constrained by epipolar geometry diverted most research focus away to point-based methods. In our approach, we tackle the problem of instable endpoints by utilizing relaxed constraints on their positions, both during matching and as well in the following bundle adjustment stage. Furthermore, we gain efficiency in estimating trifocal image relations by decoupling rotation and translation. To this end, a novel linear solver for relative translation estimation given rotations from five line correspondences in three views is introduced. Extensive experiments on long image sequences show that our line-based structure from motion pipeline advantageously complements point-based methods, giving more meaningful 3D representation for indoor scenarios. Design principles derived from manual cartography and automated graph drawing to increase readability of flow maps and graph layouts are taken into account. The origin-destination flow maps produced with our algorithm show flows with quadratic Bézier curves that reduce flow-on-flow and flow-on-node overlaps, and avoid sharp or irregular bends in flow lines. A survey of expert cartographers found that flow maps created with our automated method are similar in quality to manually produced flow maps.
