[Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (auteur) Context : Improved and cost-efficient predictions of detailed product recovery from logging operations may increase efficiency and improve value chains based on modern cut-to-length harvesting (CTL).
Aims : The objective of this study was to investigate and evaluate the use of individual tree data estimates from two inventory techniques: (a) established airborne laser scanner inventory (ALS case) and (b) traditional field inventory (BAU case) for predicting product recovery in a Swedish case study.
Methods : Statistics from previous harvester production files within the region were used to generate realistic levels of simulated stem defects. Bucking simulations were performed to optimise log products according to stem profiles, stem defects, and an operational price list expressing the demand of the industry customer. All simulation results at the stand level were compared to operational harvester production data that were used to provide an accurate measure of the ‘true’ product recovery. The total harvested area was 139 ha including 16 forest stands. Seven groups of log products were included in the analysis. The predicted versus real top diameter distributions of sawlogs were evaluated using an error index to express deviations.
Results : At the stand level, the average error index values were 0.15 and 0.18 for the ALS and BAU approaches, respectively. As a consequence of an overall bias of the ALS tree lists the opposite was found at the total wood flow level, with the field-based data yielding a lower error index.
Conclusions : The volume predictions for different log product groups were slightly more accurate in the ALS case than in the BAU case.

[Termes IGN] tunnelRésumé : (Auteur) In 2012, for the first time in Belgium, integrated monitoring was carried out to assess the deformations of a twin-tube tunnel below the River Scheldt in Antwerp under the influence of estuarine tides. Levelling measurements during a tide cycle showed a variation in the height of levelling bolts of up to 10 mm between low and high tide. Simultaneous strain-gauge measurements also showed a significant difference in strains. A deformation of the tunnel section during each twice-daily tide cycle, resulting in an eccentric “egg” or “pumpkin” shape, could hold large risks for the strength and durability of the tunnel structure. However, laser scanning results showed that there were no significant deformations of the tunnel's shape during the tide cycle. The laser scanning measurements resulted in a more thorough view of the deformation pattern which was much needed and improved the long-term risk assessment of the tunnel. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) Detailed information about timber assortments and diameter distributions is required in forest management. Forest owners can make better decisions concerning the timing of timber sales and forest companies can utilize more detailed information to optimize their wood supply chain from forest to factory. The objective here was to compare the accuracies of high-density laser scanning techniques for the estimation of tree-level diameter distribution and timber assortments. We also introduce a method that utilizes a combination of airborne and terrestrial laser scanning in timber assortment estimation. The study was conducted in Evo, Finland. Harvester measurements were used as a reference for 144 trees within a single clear-cut stand. The results showed that accurate tree-level timber assortments and diameter distributions can be obtained, using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) or a combination of TLS and airborne laser scanning (ALS). Saw log volumes were estimated with higher accuracy than pulpwood volumes. The saw log volumes were estimated with relative root-mean-squared errors of 17.5% and 16.8% with TLS and a combination of TLS and ALS, respectively. The respective accuracies for pulpwood were 60.1% and 59.3%. The differences in the bucking method used also caused some large errors. In addition, tree quality factors highly affected the bucking accuracy, especially with pulpwood volume. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Point-based and object-based building extractions were conducted in airborne LiDAR data in a sample area of Buffalo, New York. First, the earth surface points were filtered from the entire laser scan data set using a new filtering algorithm, which combines the TIN slope modelling and statistical analysis. The off-ground points were extracted for buildings in the study area using both point cluster analysis and object-oriented classifications. The accuracies of both approaches were tested using the digitised ground truth. The outcomes of accuracy testing of the point-based method are correctness: 88.74%, completeness: 92.67% and quality: 83.50%. The results of the accuracy of object-based building extraction are correctness: 87.21%, completeness: 60.14%, and quality: 55.26%. Reconstructions of 3D building models based on the extracted building points were performed. This study contributes scientific and technological knowledge for researchers in developing more effective methods in converting the LiDAR survey to a 3D GIS database.
